Japan pulls out of Vietnam- Northern Vietnam is controlled
After Japan takes thier forces out of Vietnam, Independent Japan is controlled by Emperor Bao Dai until Ho's Viet Minh forces rose up, taking over Bao Dai and declaring it Democratic Republic of Vietnam with Ho as president. -

France Backs Bao
France helps Bao Dai, and sets up the State of Vietnam which is South Vietnam. Ho and the Frence sign an agreement that the French can replace the Nationalist Chinese forces, in exchange for recognition of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. -

The French Split
The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was the end of the French Involvement of French in Vietnam. The French surrendered and Vietnam was temporarily partitioned at the 17th parallel. -
Geneva Agreements Settled
After an attempt to unite North and South Vietnam because of the split supporters of the French and Viet Minh. It was settled that the North and south were split by a military demarcation line. -
Step Aside Bao
The anti-communist Ngo Dinh Diem pushed Bao aside to become president of the Government of the Republic of Vietnam. -
The U.S Supports Diem
When Diem declared the independence of Republic of vietnam, naming himself as president, the U.S sent their support, and Diem refused to hold the reunification election, thinking he couldn't stand up against Ho. -
Guerrilla War Explodes
After the US support, north vietnam was excuting and capturing land owners because of a land reform. This was heading toward the south. Diem, on the other hand, was capturing those who were on the side of Viet Minh's side. Viet Minh conducted a campaign of guerrilla warefare to crush Diem army. On the date above, two americans were killed in a guerrilla raid at Bien Hoa, South Vietnam. -

Nguyen Van Thieu became president of Republic of Vietnam (south vietnam) after winning withe 34% of the votes. -
My Lai Massacre
US soldiers massacred 347 Vietnamese civilians, mostly children, women, and elderly men in the town of My Lai. The massacre news wouldnt reach the US public until novermber of 1969 -

Ho Chi Minh Dead
North Communist leader dies at 79. They embalmed him and put him on display. -
Invasion in Cambodia
American and S. Vietnamese troops attacked Cambodia to destory bases that might have supplied aid to the Viet Cong. After 60 day mission, thousands of weapons and rice were captured and 10,00 plus Viet cong were killed. -
Peace or Bomb? Operation Linebacker
Six days after the Peace talks, Nixon ordered a bombing campaign on north vietnam to keep them at the negotiating table as well as a response to the Easter offensive attacks. Oporations lasted 12 days with 20,000 tons of bombs -
Paris Peace Accord signed
N. Vietnam, S. Vietnam, and U.S reps, signed the Paris Peace Accords in which a ceasefire was estalished immediately and the US. Agreed to withdraw all its combat troops. In turn, N. Vietnam would release all American POWs. -
American Involvement in Vietnam Ended
The last of the US combat troops left Vietnam ending its direct involvment in the war, however, some military advisors adn marines still remained. In total 60,000 men were dead, 150,000 wounded and at least 1,000 MIA, among the 3 million americans who served. -
South Vietnam Fell
The last two US men to die were killed at Tan Son Nhut airport in thier evacuation mission. S. Vietnam fell as the president Duong Van Minh Delivered an uncondtional surrender to the North communist.
