    A two-month process ending on 20 July 1954. Trying to regain their power in Vietnam, the conference had the French troops withdraw from Vietnam. It also caused Vietnam to divide through the 17th parallel, becoming North and South Vietnam. This separation caused tension between these groups and their beliefs.     When the US pulled its troops from Southern Vietnam, President Ngo Dinh Diem gets arrested and killed. This man was known to alienate his people and was very disliked.     Operation Starlite, also known as the Battle of Van Tuong, was seen to be the first major offensive battle by the US Military. The battle was close to a week long. It was seen as a major success for the US, it also showed the US how difficult fighting the communists would be but not impossible. By 1969 the Vietnam War Moratorium Demonstration came and millions of people came to protest the war.     The North Vietnamese army started taking over the Southern Capital. The US started a mass evacuation, saving thousands of Americans and Southern Vietnamese. This was close to the last major battle before the end of the war.
