Viet Cong Created
Communists in South Vietnam established the National Liberation Front to use guerrilla warfare against South Vietnam from the inside. -
Gulf of Tonkin Incident
The North Vietnamese fired of U.S. ships in international waters. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Gave President Johnson authorization to use "conventional" military force in Southeast Asia, without having to declare war. Was a response to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. -
First U.S. Troop land in Vietnam
President Lyndon Johnson ordered the first troops to land in Vietnam. -
Tet Offensive
North Vietnam organized an attack on around 100 cities in South Vietnam with the Viet Cong. The South Vietnam army and U.S. forces were able to repeal the attack, but this showed everyone that the enemy was very powerful. -
Peace Talks Begin
