    Vietnam Divides
    Geneva Accords, a document, was signed to temporarly separate Vietnam into two different regions, north and south. This document would also give a cease-fire line called the 17th parallel. Most of the nine countries involved agreed to the document, but American did not.
  • U.S. supports Diem

    U.S. supports Diem
    Diem named himself the president of the new Republic of Vietnam. This cause the U.S. to have his back. With the U.S. behind him, he deciced not to hold the reunification election. He feared he would lose to Ho Chi Minh, leader of North Vietnam.
  • First American deaths

    First American deaths
    The first two american deaths out of combat. Two military advisiors were killed by the guerilla warfare from the north. This was in Bien Hoa, South Vietnam.
  • National Liberation Front formed

    National Liberation Front formed
    North Vietnam created the National Liberation Front (NFL), also known as Viet Cong. This was to defeat Diem's government in the South. The Guerilla's of Viet Minh became the core members of NFL.
  • Strategic Hamlet Program

    Strategic Hamlet Program
    This program was made by the U.S. and Southern Vietnam government to group all the peasant in villages to make it harder for Viet Cong to take them over. Diem provided education and health care to them. However, they did not like being taken from their home and this cause the Viet Cong to easily gain their supportance.

    Military Assistant Command Vietnam Formed
    The MACV was formed to help control all advisory and assistant efforts to South Vietnam. By the end of !962 there were around 3,500 U.S. military advisors in South Vietnam.
  • Diem Overthrown

    Diem Overthrown
    South Vietnam General Duong Van Minh overthrew Diem, with his tactics aproved by the U.S.. Diem was killed the next along with his brother.
  • Gulf of Tonkin

    Gulf of Tonkin
    North Vietnam boats attacked two U.S. destroyers. After this U.S. bomed two north vietnam naval bases. U.S. congress also passed The Gulf of Tonkin resolution, giving the president access to take all necessary action to North Vietnam.

    Viet Cong Attacks Pleiku
    A U.S. Air Force Base in Pleiku was attacked by Viet Cong. This was the first major attack between Viet cong and the U.S.. There was a large amount of casualities on both sides.

    To make sure the north Vietnam soldiers in the south could get supplies, U.S. air force B-52's bombed the Mu Gia Pass.
  • My Lai Massacre

    My Lai Massacre
    The U.S. was looking to find and destroy a battalion, that was thought to be in the area. When they got there no men of fighting age were there. However, they continued to kill women, children, and elderly men. Then the U.S. soldiers tried to cover it up and say they killed 128 Viet Cong Soldiers in My Lai.

    The U.S. and South Vietnam attacked Cambodia. They destroyed bases that were sending aid to Viet Cong. !0,000 Viet Cong died after this battle.
  • Paris Peace Accord

    Paris Peace Accord
    U.S., North, and South Vietnam all signed the Paris peace Accord causing a cease fire. The U.S. stopped all combat troops and in return North Vietnam had to release all the american prisoners of war. In March around 600 were released.
  • All American involvment ended

    All American involvment ended
    U.S. Compat Troops offical left Vietnam. Only a few advisor and marines were left in Vietnam. A very high rate of casualities were death and wounded from the war.

    South Vietnam fell
    Duong Van Minh surrender causing South Vietnam to be under North Communism control.
