  • OXO

    OXO
    In 1952, a British Professor of Computer Science, Sandy Douglas, created OXO, also known as Tic-Tac-Toe. It was a Noughts and Crosses computer game on the EDSAC computer at the University of Cambridge. This was the first graphical computer game.
  • Tennis for Two

    Tennis for Two
    In 1958, William Higinbotham created Tennis for Two. It was a sports game that simulates a game of tennis. It was on a large analog computer at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York.
  • Spacewar!

    Spacewar!
    In 1962, Steve Russell developed Spacewar. The game was a space combat video game. It was written for the DEC PDP-1 minicomputer at MIT.
  • Odyssey

    Odyssey
    In 1972, the first video game home console was sold to consumers. This was the Odyssey and it was created by Ralph Baer, also known as the Father of Video Games. He licensed his device to Magnavox. The console eventually died out and came to an end.

    In 1977, Atari released the Atari 2600, also known as the Video Computer System. This is a home console that includes joysticks and replaceable game cartridges. It officially kicked off the second generation of video game consoles.

    Space Invaders is a 1978 arcade game created by Tomohiro Nishakado. This was the first fixed shooter game within the shooter genre. It was manufactured in Japan by Taito and licensed in the United States.

    Tetris was created by a Russian software engineer, Alexey Pajitnov, in 1984. The game allows players to rotate falling blocks to clear levels. It has been published by several companies.

    Sonic is a platform game developed by the Sonic Team and published by Sega. This was the first game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It was released in North America in June 1991 and Japan the following month.
  • New Gaming Consoles

    In 2005 and 2006, Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's Playstation 3, and Nintendo's Wii kicked off the modern age of HD gaming. The Xbox and Playstation had similar graphic capabilities. The motion-sensitive remotes for the Wii made gaming more active, which appealed to people of all ages.

    Sony's Playstation 5 was released in November of 2020. It was first released in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, North America, Singapore, and South Korea. The worldwide release was a week later. The PS5 is part of the ninth generation of video game consoles.
