    Iraq moved 30,000 troops to the Iraq-Kuwait border, and the U.S. naval fleet in the Persian Gulf was put on alert.

    President Bush told Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir not to bomb Iraq, fearing that if Israel bombed Iraq, the other Arab nations would either desert the Coalition or join Iraq.

  • The Battle of Khafji

    The Battle of Khafji ended two days later when the Iraqis were driven back by the Saudi Arabian National Guard and the U.S. Marine Corps, supported by Qatari forces. The allied forces provided close air support and used extensive artillery fire. Eleven Americans were killed in two separate friendly fire incidents, an additional 14 U.S. airmen were killed when their AC-130 gunship was shot down by an Iraqi surface-to-air missile, and two U.S. soldiers were captured during the battle.

    1st and 2nd Marine Divisions, and the 1st Light Armored Infantry Battalion crossed into Kuwait and headed toward Kuwait City. Iraqi forces in Kuwait counterattacked against U.S. troops, acting on a direct order from Saddam himself. Despite the intense combat, the Americans repulsed the Iraqis and continued to advance towards Kuwait City.

  • Kuwait is Liberated

    Saddam ordered a retreat from Kuwait, and President Bush declared it liberated.
