  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was President Monroe’s message for Congress and to the rest of the world. He was basically saying that no European countries could come into North America. This is important because it was Monroe establishing the US’s dominance in the continent.
  • US Purchases Alaska

    The United States purchases Alaska from Russia. This purchase was made for $72 million. This is very important because it allowed America to begin Imperializing. The purchase also prevented Spanish and British expansion into North America. Later on, it allowed for a gold rush. However, it was highly criticized for being as being “Sewards Folly”.

    US, Cuba, and Spain

    Cubans were very unhappy with Spain’s rule in their country. They started to have rebellions. The US were wondering if they should join and fight the Spanish. There were problems with the USS Maine blowing up that further urged the US to join. 8 days later, Congress declared war on the US. This is a very important event because this is the closest Imperialism has come to the US. Cuba had missiles that were in range of the US. This could have started a nuclear war.
  • United States Annex Hawaii

    Many American merchants has been moving to Hawaii. Missionaries also went their to spread Christianity. Americans slowly started to take over the Island. Eventually, when McKinley was in office, Hawaii was annexed as an United States territory. This is important because it gave the US the ability to put a US Naval Base in the Island.
  • The Treaty of Paris

    In December of this year, the US and Spain signed to treaty of Paris to officially end the war. The Spanish lost control over Cuba and it was given to America. They weren’t allow to have any control over it because of an amendment signed before the war. This was benefited America greatly. The SOS John Hay even called the war “a splendid little war” because he believed it had been a smooth and simple war with big rewards.
  • US Takes Philippines

    George Dewy planned a surprise attack on the Spanish-ruled Philippines. They quickly defeated them and suffered no casualties. This was important because as the US’s relations with Spain was deteriorating. This attack eventually led to Cuba’s freedom from Spain. The attack also helped the US to declare war on Spain and Spain to declare war back.
  • Philippines Revolution

    After the Spanish-American War, America had the option to annex the Philippines into the US or let them be their own state. They chose to still keep a hold on their government. McKinley believed that the Filipinos weren’t ready for self government. They refused this and created a constitution. America and McKinley rejected this and fighting broke out amongst them.   • Big Stick Diplomacy and the Panama Canal

    When Theodore Roosevelt was in office he had a policy of Big Stick Diplomacy. He believed that if the US had a strong military and control, they could easily accomplish their goals for the country. He used this to be able to get control over Panama. His plans with Panama is to create a man-made canal that connected the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. His big stick diplomacy helped him achieve his goal. This provided America to become one of the global superpowers by using great power.

    President Woodrow Wilson decide to take a new approach in Imperialism. He wanted the US to take the approach of not being militant when they try to imperialize. He directed this at some Latin American countries so they can peacefully control a country and guide them in the direction he wanted. This benefited America by giving aid to these countries, they were able to get agreements with these countries that benefited America.
  • Wilson and Mexico

    Porfirio Diaz was a dictator in Mexico. Another guy named Francisco Madero seized his power. After that in 1913, another leader tookpower with the name of Victoriano Huerta. President Wilson backed a person named Carranza and helped him become the leader of Mexico. There were rebellions that following his gain of power . This led to the uprising of Pancho Villa. Wilson had to send troops intoMexico to hunt Villa down. This is important because later inthis lead to the US declaring war onGermany.
