    Johann Gutenburg
    Gutenburg inspired much more exploration when he invented the mobile printing press. This allowed sailors to tell of the things they saw in the new world, but on a much larger scale. This sparked many Europeans to come to the new world.

    Reconquista
    The Reconquista is known as when the Christians waged war on the Moors, Jews, and Muslims, soon after Isabella and Ferninand united. Eventually the Christians took total control over the Iberian Peninsula.

    Treaty of Torsedillas
    Spain and Portugal both wanted Asia for trade and treasures so to prevent any more fighting, Pope Alexander VI created a treaty. It made a line 270 leagues west of Azores, and Spain had the rights to everything west of that, and Portugal the east.

    John Cabbot and Sebatian Cabbot

    John Cabbot and Sebatian Cabbot
    John Cabbot made the first transatlanntic voyage for England. He was looking for a route to Asia, but died on his second expedition while looking for a route to Cathay. Sebatian then did more searching in the Canada area close to the Atlantic. Both men helped get English claim on American soil.

    Ecomienda System
    This system basically told the natives that they would get protection as long as they worked under Spanish men. Basically it was the spanish telling them that they would not be killed if they bacame slave. This helped the spanish expand further, and at a faster rate.

    Slaves were brought over to the Americas as a source of free labor. They had many jobs, most involving agriculture. Mostly all slaves were treated poor and usually had short lives. The slave trade resulted in not only building up Americas economy, but also expanding its diversity.

    Protestant Reformation: Henry VII and Elizabeth I
    The reformation started when Martin Luther, and later John Calvin, started questioning the church. Henry VII eventually created the church of England to please the king. When Elizabeth I became queen she looked to finish the chaos.

    Roanoke was the first try at a colony in the Americas. Sir Walter Raleigh had a charter with 117 people aboard. When the founders headed to england to get supplies, they returned to an empty colony.
  • Richard Hakluyt

    Richard Hakluyt
    Richard Hakluyt wrote and published the book "The Principall Navigations, Voyages, and Discoveries of the English Nation". This book got stories from sailors that had been to the Americas. His writings helped motivate many people to go to the new world.

    Samuel Champlain discovered Quebec in 1608. His discovery gave the French a way to trade, mailny furs, with the indians. This also gave the French interest, making them send more exploration expeditions.
