  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise set up a line that made states South of it slave states and states North of it free. It was created in 1820. This was important because it set up a clear set of rules states had to follow. Henry Clay made this compromise. It took place in Missouri and Maine because it made Maine a free state and Missouri a slave state. It happened because both of these states were disputed over whether or not to make them slave states. It made a strict border of free and slave states.
  • Wilmot Proviso.

    Wilmot Proviso.
    It was an idea proposed by David Wilmot to prohibit slavery in all territories gained in Mexico. It made the debate over whether or not to make this land free or slave states more heated. It took place in the land gained from Mexico. This happened because they did not know whether or not to allow slavery in this land. It happened in 1846. It was not passed
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin.
    It was a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe that showed the harsh realities of slavery. It was written in Kentucky or Ohio. She wrote it for people in the North to learn more about slavery. Abraham Lincoln said she was, “...the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war."

    A set of 5 laws that were the fugitive slave act, Slave trade was abolished in D.C. New Mexico and Utah decided themselves on whether or not to be free, California would be free, and Texas gave up claims to New Mexico. It was composed by Henry Clay. It allowed popular sovereignty to decide whether or not to make them slave states. It happened in Washington D.C. This happened because they did not know whether or not to allow slavery.

    The fugitive slave act made it p for people who were caught harboring runaway slaves to be thrown in jail for 6 months, and runaway slaves in free states could be forced back into slavery. It happened because the South was mad because they were doing more to outlaw slavery. It affected African Americans. It occurred all across America. It made it possible for free black men to be forced back into slavery.

    Kansas Nebraska Act/ Bleeding Kansas
    The Kansas Nebraska Act was when people moved into Kansas and Nebraska to vote on whether or not to allow slavery. It happened on May 30th 1854. It caused riots and even a fight in Congress. Stephen Douglas created this act. It took place in Kansas and Nebraska. It took place because they needed to vote on whether or not to allow slavery in these territories and people were passionate about each side. It showed people the lengths that people would go to prove their point.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    The Dred Scott case was when Dred Scott tried to politically fight against slavery. It happened in 1857. It took place in the Supreme Court and Missouri. It involves Dred Scott. It happened because Dred Scott was fed up with slavery. It showed people in the north that African Americans were people and not just property. It was ruled that he was still a slave therefore not a person but property.

    The Lincoln Douglas debates were a series of debates in which Lincoln and Douglas fought against each other for a senate spot. These debates happened in 1858. It made a rivalry that would continue until they ran against each other for president. It involved both of these people. These debates took place in Illinois. They took place because they had to campaign against each other.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    This happened when John Brown tried to start a slave revolt with help from slaves. It started on October 16th, 1859 and lasted 2 days. It involves John Brown. It took place on Harper's Ferry. It took place because he was taught that slavery was bad. It showed people that violence would not work and not stop slavery. After this he was hanged. It showed that slaves thought that it was pretty much in their destiny to just stay slaves.
  • Lincoln's Election of 1860

    This happened when there was a four way draw and no clear winner. It then came down to the electoral college. He was elected president. It happened on November 6th, 1860. He then started a civil war and the South seceded. The states that he won were all in the North. It took place because he ran for president and people liked him.
  • Southern Secession.

    Southern Secession.
    This happened because South Carolina seceded leaving US troops at Fort Sumter. There was a misfire and this whole thing caused other states to secede. It happened on December 20th, 1860. The states the seceded were South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia. It took place all throughout the South. It happened because the North and South had different stances on slavery. It caused the civil war.
