It was a war between the north and the south over slavery. In the 1860's during the election, the long war started. -

Business and industry grew very fast after the civil war ended. Industrialization changed people's life and the way they worked -

The native Americans entered America and Americans encouraged them to live the American way -
Reconstruction
President Lincoln and republicans had ideas about the rights of the African Americans of the south. Then democrats regained power and the idea stopped. -
New inventions
Exectricity and the railroads were invented. Which made transportation easier and faster to do. -
Populism
Populism was a movement to increase farmers power in the government. After the civil war crop prices and deflation made farmers life hard. They ended up in recession -
The gilded age
The industrialization of the US led to new ideas for government. Americans believed people needed to help the less fortunate. Though everything looked good they had lots of problems. 1870-1900 -
The rise of segregation
After reconstruction ended the south began passing laws that African Americans did not have the right to vote. -
The rebirth of reform
Many Americans believed in social Darwinism and individualism but others disagreed, saying government could only be fixed if people were more active and doing more to help. -
Growth of mining
Ranching becomes a popular business. The technology is advancing now. Then during the 1880's wheat goes into a drought which is bad because the United States lead in selling the most wheat. -
Urban America
In the late 19th century immigration became a great deal. Americans began to fear immigrants because they didn't think they would adapt properly to the American lifestyle -
The imperialist vision
The US became involved in international affairs. The market business grew, and a navy was formed. -
The Spanish American war
During this war America defeated the Spanish. After the defeat the US linked with the Philippines and became an imperial power -
The progressive movement
This era was a time when Americans tried to improve the society. The tried to make out an honest, efficient, and democratic government. And the woman's movement gained lots of support as did reducing alcohol abuse 1890-1920 -
Big business
Corporations and businesses function better now that the civil war is over and store became popular and gained customers -
Urbanization
Native-born Americans and immigrants moved where they had jobs in the big cities. And the way people lived was controlled by political machines operated by the government -
Asian immigration
China's population became too big to sustain so many asains came to America. They settled in mostly western cities. Their immigration was successful -
World War I and the aftermath
Nationalism, imperialism, and milatrism led to this war in Europe. Attacks on American ships caused us to enter the war. 1914-1920 -
The wars impact
Americans victory costed the US a lot of money. Which led the economy to a depression. Then with the fears of communism came strikes, riots, and bombings. -
Growing economy/ Model T
Automobiles, and radios changed the lives of many Americans. Coolidge encouraged this growth. This is when the modal T came about, which was a car. -
The clash of values
The KKK returns, which is the klux klan. An all white group fighting for "Americanism" -
The jazz age
To restore americas faith in the government and encourage a healthy government Calvin Coolidge played jazz music. 1921-1929 -
The Great Depression begins
Risky lending policies, overproduction, and uneven income led to the Great Depression. 1929-1932 -
World War II begins
Britain and France didn't want to go to war and they tried to have an agreement for peace and it failed. -

After World War I most Americans did not want to be involved in anymore foreign wars. 1931-1941 -
Roosevelt and the New Deal
Roosevelt promised he would provide jobs to the people that were unemployed. 1933-1941 -

After WWI America went back to isolationism, and they didn't join the war the only provided 40 percent of the weapons -
The Cold War Begins
After the war, tensions continued to come up about how much freedom the soviets will allow the nations have that they controlled. -

African Americans, and other civil rights supporters challenged the thought of segregation in the US. but the government took a stand for the civil rights movement -

Durning the Cold War Americans began to worry that the region might fall to communism. Then they were sent to fight there in Vietnam -

The 1960's decade was the birth to a youth movement and challenged americas social system and middle-class values -
The feminist movement
Woman didn't agree with the way they were seen in society so they created the equal rights amendment -
The watergate scandal
Nixon was involved in a scandal, he and a bunch of others broke into the House of Representatives, and tried to cover up any trace of evidence of him being involved -
Urban problems
The government sperated everything. There was lots of crime in these big cities. Also lots of pollution -
