Proclamation of 1763
This proclamation did not allow colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. The British government feared the conflict between colonists and Native Americans would lead to another war. The also could not aford to pau British troops to defend the estern lands. Colonists were enraged by this proclamation because they felt they had won the right to settle in the Ohio River Valley after winning the French and Indian War. -

The Quartering Act
To enforce the proclamation and keep peace with Native American allies, King George III decided to send and keep 10,000 soldeirs in the colonies. To save a lot of money Parliament passed the Quartering act in 1765. This act forced the colonists to house and supply British troops. -
The Stamp Act
To raise more revenue, or income, in 1765 Parliament decidedto pass the Stamp Act. This act made it so every document, legal or commercial, had to carry an officail stamp on them. This stamp showed that they paid a tax. The Colonial leaders protested this act, and decided that the problem was being taxed with no say. -
Declatory Act
When Parliament realized that The Stamp Act was a mistake they repealed it is 1766. When they repealed the stamp act they passed the Declatory Act. This act stated that Parliament had the supreme authority to govern the Colonies. The repeal of the Stamp Act put joy in the hearts of many with celebrations while they were trying to forget about the Declatory Act. -
Townshend Act
After the rage shown by the Colonists over the Stamp Act Britian wanted to avoid further conflict. The Kings Finance Minister, Charles Townshend, gave an idea to parliament that said:
1)Until New York housed troops their assemblies would be suspended.
2)Imported goods like glass, paper, lead, ans tea were taxed before they got to the colonies.
3)To enfore this British troops were allowed to homes and businesses with Writs of Assistance.
Parliament passed it in 1767 and called it the Townshend. -
Tea Act
When Colonists boycaotted British goods trade was hurt. Because of this Parliament repealed the Townshend acts but kept the tax on tea. In 1773 Parliament passes the Tea Act. This act meant that tea had a tax and could only be sold by the British East India tea company and thier merchants. This act was very unpopular among everyone and enraged merchants. -
Intolerable Acts
In 1774 Parliament passes the Coercive acts to punish Massachusetts for the Boston Tea Party. These acts were so harsh that the colonists called it the "Intolerable Acts." One of the acts stated that Boston Harbor be closed off until they pay for the destroyed tea. Others allowed British troops to house wherever and British officers who were accused of crimes helf their trials in England. Other Colonies supportted Massachusetts by sending food and supplies. -
The Olive Branch Petition
In July 1775, the Colonists tried a last attempt at peace by drafting the Olive Branch Petition. This petition asked the British King to restore harmony between the Colonies and Great Britian. After the King read the petition he rejected it and took new measures to punish the Colonists. First, he sent the navy to block off all Colonial ports. Next, he sent Hessians, soldiers for hire , to fight Colonists rebels. Even with all the acts, soldiers, and hardships the Colonists would not back down. -
The Declaration of Independance
In July 4, 1776 Congress adopted the Declaration of Independance. This document was signed by all the delagates and sent off to the King of England. This document was based on the philosiphy of John Locke and stated all the wrong they felt Britian imposed on them. With this the Colonies became thier own nation, The United States of America.
