Proclamation of 1763
This proclamation did not allow colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. The British government feared the conflict between colonists and Native Americans would lead to another war. They also could not afford to pay British troops to defend the western lands.Colonists were enraged by this proclamation because they felt they had won the right to settle in the Ohio River Valley after winning the French and Indian War. -

Quartering Acts
The Quartering Acts were passed by Parliament. This was a cost-saving measure that required the colonies to quarter ,or house, British soldiers and provide them with supplies. Most of the troops were put in New York by General Thomas Gage , commander of these forces. -
Stamp Acts
The Stamp Act was passed by Parliament, which required all legal and commercial documents to carry an official stamp showing that a tax had been paid . All diplomas , contracts , and wills had to carry a stamp. Published materials such as newpapers had to be written on special stamped paper also. -
Townshend Acts
The first of the Townshend Acts suspended New York's assembly until New Yorkers agreed to provide housing for the troops. Taxes were imported on various goods brought into the colonies, such as glass, paper , paint , lead , and tea. The money raised would be used to pay the salaries of British governors and other officials in the colonies. -
Tea Acts & Boston Tea Party
Parliament put a tax on tea during the Tea Acts. On the evening of December 16,1773, a group of men disguised as Native Americans boarded three tea ships docked in Boston Harbor. They dumped all the tea into the water. -
Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were passed to punish the Massachusetts colony and to serve as a warning to other colonies. At first, the British called this act the Coercive Acts. Later on , they were so harsh that colonists called them the Intolerable Acts. -
Battles of Lexington & Concord
The first battles of the Revolutionary War were Lexington and Concord. Americans would have to choose sides and back up their political opinions by force of arms. Loyalists supported the British. Patriots sided with the rebels. -
Olive Branch Petition
Moderates in Congress drafted the Olive Branch Petition and sent it to London. This document asked the king to restore harmony between Britain and the colonies. Some members opposed the petition but signed it anyways as a last hope. -
Declaration Of Independence
The Declaration Of Independence is a document that proclaimed independence. It was composed by Thomas Jefferson. The idea is that people have unalienable rights, rights that the government cannot take away. John Hancock was the first person to sign the Declaration.
