    Young biology teacher, John Scopes, was taken to court for teaching the evolutionary theory to his class. His defender was liberal agnostic Clarence Darrow. Darrow was opposed by Bible-thumping William Jennings Bryon. It became the "trial of the century" as the conflict between Darwinism and Christianity came to a head. Bryon was overturned.
  • The Spirit of St. Louis

    Charles Lindbergh flew the plane, Spirit of St. Louis, on the first non-stop solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris.
  • The Jazz Singer is released

    "The Jazz Singer" produced by the Warner Bros was the first moving picture to be accompanied with sound. It revolutionized the entertainment industry.

    Dust Bowl

    Severe droughts existing from Texas to the Dakota's resulted in the Dust Bowl years. As crops became harder to grow and prices continued to drop, farmers were unable to make payments on their land. Banks foreclosed and families traveled trying to find work.
  • Roosevelt Promises New Deal

    In a speech on Franklin Roosevelt's presidential campaign trail, he promise Americans an elusive "New Deal". It would have been an empty promise had Roosevelt not enacted New Deal policies within days of inauguration.
  • Bonus Army

    As Congress debated whether or not to advance cash bonuses due in 1945 to WW1 veterans, unemployed veterans and their families gathered in Washington, D.C. These families erected a Hooverville, and upon rejection of the bill many left Washington. Those that stayed were ordered to leave. Upon disobedience of the order, they were gassed, chased down, and the Hooverville was torched.

  • Fair Labor Standards Act

    The Fair Labor Standards Act set the national minimum wage at 25 cents an hour. Although it would be amended for a higher minimum wage later on, this act was the first to set a minimum standard.
  • Executive Order # 8802

    The Executive Order #8802 was also called the Fair Employment Practice in Defense Industries Act. It disabled racial discrimination when hiring for federal jobs.

    The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor ended America's isolationism in the second World War.

    America enters the second World War after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Congress declared war on all Axis countries, turning two separate wars into one, huge, truly world war.
