    Roosevelt had been a president of the United States, and was well-known for serving for four terms- far more than any other candidate. At a point in his life, he had contracted poliomyelitis, which had paralyzed his legs. As president, Roosevelt had served during the Great Depression and Second World War.

    He had been a Jamaican-born civil rights activist who had urged Africans to return to their homeland and to have economical independence.

    Previous to being in war, he had been said to be a drunk who would never amount to anything. However, he had a religous coversion shortly before the war. York had been considered the greatest American hero in WWI.

    Jazz music had been part of the musical area of the Harlem Renaissance and had been born in New Orleans. It was known for being bright and upbeat, like much of the culture in New Orleans.

    He had been a poet who was known for contributing to the Harlem Rennaisance in the 1920s. Hughes had also written a variety of other literature, including playwrites and novels.

    Charles Lindburgh had been the first man to fly across the Atlantic ocean, alone and non-stop, in 1927.
  • Sussex Pledge

    Sussex Pledge
    A French Channel-crosser passenger steamer, by the name of the 'Sussex', had been shot down by Germany, killing numerous civilians. The Germans then gave a pledge to tell the ship that they were going to be torpedoed before doing so, however, this promise was quickly broken two years later, in 1917, when the Germans resumed Unrestricted Submarine Warfare.

    This had been the term for when African Americans moved from the south and into the urban areas of the north. This had been caused by the greater amount of jobs and less racism in comparison to the south.

    Battle of the Argonne Forest
    This battle had been an offensive attack on the Germans on the Western front during WWI. It had influenced the war by having the 'Lost Battalian', which had been five hundred soldiers who had fought and only two hundred survived.

    Treaty of Versailles
    The treaty had been negotiated by the allied powers, and ended up punishing Germany on account of WWI. This stripped away almost all of Germany's military power and left them greatly in debt. It really made them angry and caused WWII as a result.

    The Harlem Renaissance had been a spreading of black culture and pride throughout the United States. The hub of this movement was, of course, Harlem.

    Warren G. Harding’s “Return to Normalcy”
    The piece was a promise by Harding while he ran for presidential candidate. He spoke of how the United States was returning to its state before WWI.

    During the Great Depression, due to the economy, a change was in order, and when president Roosevelt took office, he had immediately got to work with his plan. The New Deal was a series of projects which had been done around the United States in order to create more prosperity and job oppurtunities.

    In the midplains of the United States, there had been improper plants within the soil. When drought struck, the sand was incredibly loose, and flew up into the air in a massive sandstorm, affecting the residents and local wildlife. The event had been fixed when native grasses and other plants were replanted.

    The Red Scare referred to the Americans' fear of the Russians and other communist countries rising to power. The reason behind the 'red' was because that was the dub used for communism, which exists still today.
