This clause in the Constitution gave federal gov't the right to regulate,tax and even ban slave importation after 1808 -
Missouri Compromise
Congress' effort to diffuse tension between political and federal parties after Missouri's request to become a slave state. In 1820 America had an even number slave and free states. It allowed for Missouri to become a slave state the same time Maine did so it would stay even. -
Turner's Rebellion
Lasted 2 days. Unsuccessful attempt to overthrow plantation owners in Southhampton County, Virginia. Rebel slaves killed about 65 whites, because of this it caused a fear among the whites that another rebellion would accure so they tightened their grip on slaves. -

Gag Rule Resolution
This resolution forbad the House of Representatives to talk about the slavery issue. Any antislavery petition or Act was to be automatically tabled to keep from the discussion of slavery. Over time the gag rule became more and more strict. -
Wilmot Proviso
A proposal to prohibit slavery on new territory USA got from Mexico. In 1846 David Wilmot proposed this as an amendment to a bill that would be a predecessor for the US Civil War to prohibt slavery. -
Underground Railroad
Formed in the late 1700s but it was at the height of its use in 1850s. It ran from the south to the free states all the way to Canada.It is said that over 100,00 slaves escaped their masters by 1860s -
Fugitive Slave Act
A law making it a crime to help slaves runaway. Northerners were also required to return runaways or face 6 months of prison and a fine of $1,000 and if they did they were rewared. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri who went to court to sue for his freedom because of the fact that he had lived in a free state before returning to Missouri. The Supreme Court decided that since Scott was enslaved he wasn't a US citizen and that he was slave and slaves were viewed as and property can be over anywhere and still be owned. -
Lincoln-Douglass Debates
Also known as the Great Debates, Lincoln and Douglass faced against each other Lincoln representing the Republicans while Douglass represented the Republicans. Lincoln had moderate views on slavery while Douglass supported white supremacy. -
Lincoln was Elected
On Nov. 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the United States of America. He would go on to be president thru the Civil War and emancipate all the slaves with the 13th Amendment. Unfortunelty Lincoln didnt see the end of the civil war becuase he was assassinated and the 13th amdent passed after his death in January 31, 1865.
