  • Manifest Destiny

    A term used to describe the attitude during the 19th century. It was mostly used for the movement of the U.S. population moving west due to land and gold. t had also helped to drive the Native Americans out and to also help with the war against Mexico.
  • Urbanization

    Refers to a population shift from rural areas to urban. This process is mostly known during the periods of industrialization and modernization. Mostly due to the fact of people moving from their farms for jobs in the city.
  • Immigration & the American Dream

    The American Dream is a simple idea that promises success to all that work hard in the United States. Although this was not the case for most immigrants traveling into the United States. During that time period we were better to them than we are today, and the tension is still becoming stronger between immigrants and America.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882

    This act had prevented immigration from China to the United States. This was due to the fact the Chinese were trying to overtake or take advantage of immigration in the United States. This was to prevent them from doing in that nature.
  • Jane Addams

    She is known as the "mother" of social work. She was a pioneer settlement activist/reformer, public philosopher, author, and a sociologist. She had also co-founded an early settlement house in the United States.
  • Andrew Carnegie

    He led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. He is often identified as one of the richest people ever. During the last 18 years of his life he had given about 350 million to charities, and Universities.
  • Populism

    Political oriented group of agrarian reformers mostly in the south and the middle west. Populism is most common in democratic nations. Most populists seek to destroy or disrupt the social order.
  • Susan B. Anthony

    Susan was a women's rights activist who played a crucial role in the women's suffrage movement. As she was born in a Quaker family committed to equality, she had collected anti-slavery petitions at the age of 17. In 1851 she had become an agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society.
  • Clarence Darrow

    He was an American lawyer, and a leading member of the American Civil Liberties Union. He is also known for being a prominent advocate for Georgist Economic Reform. His wit and eloquence made him one of the most prominent attorneys and civil libertarians in the nation.
  • William Jennings Bryan

    Willam was a former secretary of state under Woodrow Wilson. He is known as emerging from the democratic party, standing three times as the parties nominee. Because of his faith in the wisdom of common people, he was often called "The Great Commoner."
  • Eugene V. Debs

    Eugene was an American union leader, and one of the founding members of the Industrial Workers of the World. He was also a five time candidate of the socialist party of America, for the President of the United States. He had become one of the most well known socialists living in the United States.
  • Theodore Roosevelt

    He was an American Statesman, author, and soldier who served as the 26th President of the United States. He had also served as the 25th Vice President of the United States.He is known for being a driving force during the Progressive Era
  • Upton SInclair

    Upton was an American writer known for writing over a hundred books and other works in other genres. He is best known for his book named The Jungle. The book exposed labor and sanitary condition in the meat packing industry.
  • Ida B. Wells

    Ida was an American journalist, sociologist, and feminist. She was also an early leader of the Civil Rights Movement. She was also one of the founders of the National Association for The Advancement of Colored People.
  • 16th Amendment

    The 16th amendment is so the Congress shall have the power to lay and collect taxes on incomes. This is also without apportionment among the several states. Also without the regard to any census or enumeration.
  • 18th Amendment

    The 18th Amendment prohibited the making and selling of alcoholic beverages. The amendment was the first to set a time delay before it would take effect after ratification. Not only did it prohibit the making and selling it prohibited anything to do with alcohol except for medicine.
