The protestant Reformation was launched in the 1530s after King Henry VIII, because of this, and the Spanish being Englands ally in the first part of the century, England took little interest in establishing their own colony. -
Jamestown
In 1606, Virgina Company received a Charter from King James I for a settlement in the New World. Blind by the thought of gold, Virginia sent three ships resulting in the making of Jamestown. -
The English and the Native Americans
When the english landed in 1607 the native people living in the James river area were dominanted by the chieftan powahatan. At first the Powahatan people thought that the english could be allies, but when De la Warr arrived in 1610 he destroyed all chances of the english and Powahatans living in peace. He came under orders of the Virgina company which resulted in the Anglo - Pwahatans war.
