Industrial Revolution
Labor unions arose because even though many found it difficult on how big business was ran, they saw very little in compensation. Labor unions helped spread the word so that workers could bargain for more rights such as more pay and better working conditions. -
Haymaerket Square Riot
After a laobor protest, Haymarket Square turned into a riot after someone threw a bomb at the police killing eight people. Eight labor union workers were convicted with the bombing. -
Homestead Strike
An industrial lockout which developed a battle between strikers and private security. After gojng on strike, it had won the workers a three year contract. When the plant manager came in, he stepped up production and when the union workers refused to accept, he locked them out of the plant. -
Ludlow Massacre
An attack on the Colorado National Guard on a tent colony of 1,200 striking coal miners and thier families leaving 2 dozen people killed. -
Great Depression
During the depression, about one third aof American work force was unemployed. With Roosevelt in office, the great Depression came to an end as he got many workers employed back into unions by passing a law that strikes should not be stopped. -
Yellow Dog Contract
An agreement betweeen an employer and employee in which that the employee agrees not to be a member of the labor union. -
The New Deal
There were 3 million union memebers compared to 5 million after the depression. The future of the union looked good, but soon got changed. After the depression it left them with many unskilled workers. -
Fair Labor Act
This protects workers from unequal pay, excessive work hours, lack of overtime, unsafe working conditions. -
World War II

Taft- Hartley Act
It allows any person to work at any place of employment without being forced to join the union.
