  • 1985 Kenilworth road riot

    After only 14 minutes of a match between Millwall and Luton Town, Millwall hooligans began rioting in the stands, causing the referee to halt the game for 25 minutes. The match went on, and during the final stages, a rumour surfaced that the pitch could be invaded. As soon as the game was over, Millwall fans rushed onto the field. Players sprinted to the dressing room as fans threatened them with weapons. Fans began to tear seats out and abuse police. This resulted in 81 injuries.
  • Heysel stadium disaster

    1 hour prior to Liverpool and Juventus playing in the Europa league final, opposing fans began to beef. As rocks and missiles were thrown Liverpool fans invaded the Juve section. Due to the threat, Juve fans retreated and forced their way towards the perimeter. This means all the fans already standing their were crushed or suffocated. Eventually, the sheer amount of people caused the wall of the stand to collapse. This event resulted in 39 deaths and 600 injuries.

    This is the most tragic and controversial event. When gates to the stand were opened, thousands of Liverpool fans rushed in. As more entered, pressure against the large fence in the front increased. No control of amount of people was held, which allowed far too many Liverpool fans to enter, who weren't aware of outcry at the front. Fans were crushed against the fence and suffocated. Scenes are extremely graphic. This resulted in 96 deaths, 700 injuries, and is Britain's largest ever tradegy.

    In 1992, the English Premier League banned any form of standing in stadiums. This would ensure safe numbers of people and reduce hooliganism. It gave all Premier League teams 2 years to convert. By 1994, every team had an all-seater stadium.
  • Lusaka, Zambia disaster

    9 fans were crushed and 78 others were injured following a stampede between Zambia and Sudan.
  • Monrovia, Liberia disaster

    3 people died and hundreds injured as thousands of fans forced their way into an overcrowded stadium.
  • Ellis Stadium disaster

    Ellis Stadium disaster
    During a game between Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in South Africa, Approximately 90,000 people tried to force their way into a 60,000 capacity stadium. 43 people were crushed to death against the fence and this resulted in the largest sports tragedy in South African history.
