St. Louis: The Starting Point
Expedition starts off in Camp Dubois in St. Louis, Missouri. 48 men are involved. There are many captains and other diarists on board and also carpenters. They set off in a keelboat with two pirogues. They rowed 14 miles! -
Casualties and Illnesses
They are now near Sioux City in Iowa. There were many casualties that happened during the journey like cholera, the flu, starvation, and many others. Sergeant Charles Floyd experienced the casualty of a burst appendix. He was the first that died in the Corps. -
A Baby's Birth
Lewis and Clark are currently in Yankton, South Dakota. When a baby is born they are born by the Yankton tradition. Lewis would wrap an American flag to claim that the baby is indeed an American. -
The Affect of Animals
In the Plains, the Corps discover unknown animals that they've never seen before! They found animals like coyote, deer, and others. The men helped a prairie dog be brought to safety. -
Sioux Tribe Experience
Lewis and Clark continue on their journey. They meet with the Sioux Tribes for the first time because they demanded one of their boats to go where they need to go. A fight was about to take place but a chief stopped it. -
Freezeing Weather, Fort Mandan Experience, Aiding and Trade
It is -45 degrees Fahrenheit! One of the men in the group said that it was much, much colder than they thought. 2 months past October, they decided to built a fort near the river from the village. They hire a man named Toussaint Charbonneau who was of the Hidatsa tribe. Toussaint needed help to get back to where he and his wife should be. Lewis and Clark made a deal to help them. His wife Sacagawea was of the Shoshone tribe and was a guide for them. They helped them out on their journey. -
The Shoshone Tribe
They find a village of the Shoshone tribe. Sacagawea helps by translating to help Lewis and Clark understand what they are saying. They name the village Camp Fortunate. -
Idaho
There's starvation that is occurring. The expedition continues out of Idaho. A month later, they rowed into the Clearwater River. -
The Use of Pine Trees
The group was down on supplies. They were given help by a chief named Twisted Hair. He taught them how to survive by making fires out of pine trees and also making canoes out of them. -
Fort Clatsop
The corps decides to take a break because it's CHRISTMAS DAY! They decide to make camp in Fort Clatsop. This was named after an Indian tribe that is close to where they're located at this moment. -
The Blackfoot Fight
In Missouri, there is a Blackfeet tribe who were trying to steal their supplies. They started a fight. In the fight, a few of these men were killed. The Corps continue onto their journey.
