U.S. Immigration Patterns

  • Period: to

Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries - Europe & Sub - Saharan Africa

In the 1700 - 1800's Europeans would come to America to get away from the religious and and political persecution of England(pull). The people of Sub - Saharan Africa would come to America because they were forced to as slaves(push). The first African slaves were introduced to America in 1619. This was made illegal in 1808, but still another 250,000 came to America illegally as slaves.
  • Period: to

Mid - Nineteenth to Early Twentieth Century - Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia, Southern and Eastern Europe

From the 1840's-50's the Irish and Germans were pushed to America because of bad economics, and political unrest in their home countries. Scandinavians were the first to start coming to America for the Industrial Revolution, and 20 years later, so did Russians and Italians. Before you could be admitted into the country, you had to go through Ellis Island to be checked.Because there was war in this time, there was also a law passed to allow men to bring their foreign love interests to America.
  • Period: to

Late Twentieth and Early Twenty - First Century - Asia, and Latin America

Asians started coming to America a lot around WWI, and I think that this would be a push and a pull, because most of them were drawn to the oppurtunities of the United States, but at the same time they could be fleeing from the war. The same could be said for now. They might be leaving because of the Korean War, WWI, WWII, etc. But they could also be looking for more oppurtunity in the US. Latin Americans have been pulled to the US because of better pay for jobs, more jobs in general, etc.
