    Roanoke was the first non Spanish European settlement in present day North Carolina. it was settled by 100 Europeans coming for a new life in the new world. John white was the head of the Roanoke as the governor and leader of the expedition. Roanoke was supposed to be a permanent settlement, but the lack of supplies and the leaving of john white led to the complete vanishing of the island settlement. (notes)

    Maryland was settled by catholics and protestants. The catholics came to escape religious persecution from the church of england. Maryland had an act passed called the maryland toleration act that granted religious freedom.     This act was set in place to protect worship for the trinitarian christians. This act protected against religious persecution, but the act also stated whoever did not believe jesus was divine should be executed. Jonathan would use fear as a device in his sermons to get people to listen and be afraid of God. This fear would make someone believe in God in times like these.
