Period: to
Westward expansion
Westward expansion created many jobs through farming and laying down railroad tracks. it was also a time of new technology and a discovery of new farming methods. Wheat became to the west what cotton was to the south. People expanded west, claiming land and making lives for themselfs. -
Imperialism people
Today I met Young Teddy Roosevelt & Alfred Mahan at a party, They both seemed to have big plans for the future, politicly and such. Roosevlt said he use to be sick as a child, although I can hardly believe that given his current health. Mister Alfred is in the navy, an admiral actually. -
Period: to
gilded age
the gilded age was the time between the civil war and WWI, the US population and economy grew dramaticly. There was much political curroption and only the very wealthy lived good lives. -
Manifest Destiny
Everyone's been talking about traveling westward and claiming land, searching for gold, making a living away from the city and the factories. America definetly was meants to go from one sea to another. Perhaps I'll go too, I heard someone found gold in california, that's a good reason to go. right? -
Crazy Horse
As we made our way west we found Native land, It was the Oglala Sioux, or Lakota tribe. A Man named 'Crazy Horse' gave us a start when he and his men got defencive and yelled at us to get off of their sacred land, we were on 'their land' afterall,Tresspassing. With some talking we convinced 'Crazy horse' that we were not like the mean 'white men' that were trying to get the Lakota off of their sacred land. After that encounter we left with a new respect... -
Great plains adventure
While we headed out towards California in search for gold, we stopped and claimed our own free plot of land, bult a house, and started growing crops. We found a spot with water and a few trees, it was the first we'd seen in out travels and jumped at the oporitunity. -
Homesteader and dry farming
We've decided to grow wheat, the soil's very dry here, so we have to use a Dry Farming method and plant seeds deep in the soil where the're some water. It's a really effective way to plant our crops, Maybe we'll plant a tree next. -
Steel plow
W got a new plow today for farmiong. The steel plow is a very usefull contraption, Withought it, faming here on the dry plains would be much more tiring and less productive. it takes my brother less than half the time it use to take. -
where
I moved back to the east, farming got a bit boring. I'm going to Manhatten, New york in search of work and excitment. I heard there's a lot more factorie in the east. -
Gilded age ideas
Thy've recently passed some chinese exclusion act. immigrants were taking up jobs and americans believed it was not right. it looks like for the next ten years we wont see any ore chinese immigrants, they aren't allowed to come here and take up jobs anymore. -
Imperialism ideas
hawaii's being annexed aparently? Recently President William McKinley was urging this choice. because of the nationalism brought by the spanish-american war the place was anexed. we never know what will happen though, perhaps in the near future the place may become a territory or even another state! wouldn't that be swell? On another note, there's been an abundance of imperialism around these parts, more so now that i'm bqck in the city. -
Period: to
Imperialism
Imperialism is when a stronger country takes over a weaker country policicly, economicly, or culturally. For example, America took over Cuba after winning the right from Spain, obtained some land even though that was not the initial goal. we helped a smaller country out because we had financial ties and sympathy for them. -
Gilded age technology
Vertical screw railways, or elivators, seem to help people quite a bit here in the city. without these handy machines new york and big cities probobly wouldn't have gotten so tall. there's buildings tht reach towards the skies, sure there are stairs but and elivator saves so much time an energy. heck! perhaps one day they may just end up saving someone's life! -
job
I've been working at this factory for a while now and there was a horrid fire today! I got out but some weren't as fortunate! that elivator saved my life! the stairs were on fire and it was the only way down and out. people are calling this disaster the 'Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire' I suppose I'm off to find work elsewhere. -
Gilded age people
I ran ito the one and only, Mister Rockefeller. He's had a bit of trouble recently with his workers, strikes and such. He's quite a wealthy man, although he doesn't seem too happy to me. I mean, how can one be so hapy with only the company of money and scared employees and enemies?
