  • Homestead Act

When the Homestead act was passed a lot of settlers moved to the west. This act offered up to 160 acres of public land to anyone who would claim it. This was because the west was very unpopulated. Since farmers needed lots of acres to grow their crops they would obviously want to move.
  • Period: to

    Reconstruction

Reconstruction was a time right after the civil war when a lot of administrations wanted to reconstruct society.
  • Freedman's Bureau

I think the most important event that happened for the ex-slaves was that the Freedman's Bureau was started. The Freedmen's Bureau really helped ex- slaves because it helped them get started in life. The freedmen's Bureau provided food, clothing, medical care and education to them.
  • Congressional Reconstruction Began

I think Congressional reconstruction was the most impactful for of reconstruction because they emphasized civil rights and voting rights for the freedmen. During this time is when The Freedmen's Bureau was running. The freedmen's bureau helped former slaves make a live for themselves . That time was also when the civil rights act was passed. The congressional Reconstruction was when former slaves were really helped.
  • Transcontinental railroad

Railroads played an important part in the westward expansion. If farmers wanted to ship their crops to a market, it had to go by riverboat or train. Usually if a town had a railroad a lot of people would live there but if it didn't have a railroad then it was basically a ghost town. Even if a farmer had hundreds of acres of corn or wheat that didn't make him rich. He had to ship the corn out through the railroad so he could make money. The invention of the train ended up helping everyone.
  • Whites interaction with the Plains Indians

The indians mostly stayed away from the settlers until they found out they had guns. When they found out they had guns they immediately wanted to trade. The only war type of interaction they had was when the settlers threatened their hunting areas.
  • Reconstruction Ended

Reconstruction ended in 1877 originally it was only meant to last a few years but it had such a good success that they continued it for a while. Reconstructions biggest success has to be the Freedman's Bureau because it educated many African-Americans. This gave them an opportunity to advance socially.
  • The invention of the light bulb

Thomas Edison developed the world’s first practical incandescent electric light bulb. I think this is the most important innovation because light was needed everywhere. Even though he didn't technically invent it he did improve it to make it practical, safe, and economical for home use.
  • Great Southwest Railroad Strike

The American Railroad was expanding really fast. The KNights of Labor went on strike at the UNion Pacific and Missouri Pacific railroads.Thousands of workers across Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Texas refused to work, they cited unsafe conditions and unfair hours and pay. The strike had very bad commitment from other railroad unions. Eventually the strike was a complete fail.
