US capitol moves
The city of Washington was created to replace Philadelphia as the nation's capital because of its geographical position in the center of the existing new republic. The states of Maryland and Virginia ceded land around the Potomac River to form the District of Columbia, and work began on Washington in 1791. Jun 3, 1800, Pres Adams moved to a temporary residence in the new capital as construction was completed on the executive mansion. On Nov 1, the pres was welcomed into the White House -
Gabriel Prosser hung
Prosser devised a plan for slaves to seize control of Richmond by killing all of the whites (except the Methodists, Quakers and Frenchmen) and then establishing a Kingdom of VA with himself as monarch. However, earlier in the day two slaves who wanted to protect their masters betrayed the plot to VA authorities. Prosser & the other revolt leaders were probably influenced by the US Revolution and with the rhetoric of freedom, equality and brotherhood.
