The word "cowboy"came from the English language in 1725. It is the English translation of the word vaquero. Which is a Spanish word for a person who manages cattle while riding on horseback. It came from vaca,which means "cow," which came from the Latin word vaca. Cowboys came from a variety of backgrounds, which included European immigrants, African Americans, native Americans & mid western & southern settlers.They also were retired law man, civil war vets, outlaws or gunslingers. -

The Dawes Severalty Act
This Act started on February 8, 1887. It opened up their lands to individual ownership and it was from U.S. policy toward the Natives until the 1930’s.This contract lasted 25 years and the land could not be sold or taxed. After, they could do whatever they wanted with it.The Burke Act of 1906 allowed the 25 year period to be sped up and allowed them full ownership and citizenship.The land quickly got taken away more and more. It went from 137 million acres to 50 million acres in the 1930’s.
