U of U History

  • University of Deseret Opens

    University of Deseret Opens
On February 28, 1850 the University of Deseret opens, which will later be changed to the University of Utah. Probably a good idea as Deseret is just a weird word. Is it desert or dessert? Like, just pick something already, we have too many words like this. Jeez. Freakin' Brigham Young.
  • University of Deseret Shuts Down

    University of Deseret Shuts Down
The University closed just three years into its life. It wasn't opened again until 1867. The location moved around Salt Lake, until 1892. It was officially moved to Fort Douglas and then re-named the University of Utah. This isn't an actual picture of the U, it's actually Norman Bates' house from Psycho (1960). I just thought they looked similar and wanted to see if anyone would notice. I bet you didn't.
  • Academic Controversy

    Academic Controversy
Joseph Kingsbury was the Dean of the University from 1897 until 1916. In 1915 he recommended that five faculty members resign because of remarks a graduating speaker made about the current governor. In protest, a third of the faculty resigned. Something about freedom of speech. Who really knows anymore. Not me.
  • World War One, Great Depression, and World War Two

World War One, Great Depression, and World War Two
Enrollment at the University of Utah was interrupted multiple times throughout the early 20th century. During the last year of World War Two enrollment dropped to an all-time low of 3,400 students. I was going to put a picture of Hitler getting shot in Inglorious Basterds (2009) but decided against it. Opted for FDR, Churchill, and Stalin. Probably should have done Hitler on second thought. Oh, well.
  • U of U Graduate Founds Pixar

U of U Graduate Founds Pixar
Ed Catmull spent eight years at the U and founded Pixar when he graduated. Pixar makes animated movies. They're pretty dope. I don't know if you've ever heard of Toy Story, but check it out sometime. It's worth it.
  • The Olympics

    The Olympics
Salt Lake City hosted the Olympics in 2002. Rice-Eccles Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. Nothing really to funny about this that I can think of. Maybe I'll think of something later. I didn't.
  • Renewable Energy

    Renewable Energy
In 2011 the U made the decision to install Solar Ivy. It's basically solar panels but shaped like ivy, so it looks prettier. I don't really know who is being fooled by this. Maybe birds. The U is currently ranked number three by the EPA for annual green energy by colleges.
  • Utah Joins the Pac-12

    Utah Joins the Pac-12
In 2011 the Utah Utes joined the Pac-12, one of the biggest division in the NCAA. They were previously in the Mountain Conference. I'm not sure if the Utes do good in the Pac-12. I'm focused on the more important Pac. Pac-Man.
  • University of Utah: Korean Edition

    University of Utah: Korean Edition
In 2014, the University of Utah opened a sister campus in Seoul, South Korea. Not North Korea; two very different places. It is funded by the South Korean Government.
  • Most Important Year for the U

Most Important Year for the U
In Fall of 2015, the U had their most mediocre student enroll. It's me. While being incredibly average in almost every category, I do get my work done. So that's something.
