Trouble Don't Last- Samuel and Harrison's Journey by Marietta Romaine, Caroline Battenhouse, Kitty Reyes, Marisa Flores.

    Day 1
    Samuel breaks the plate while doing chores at the Kentucky farm. He gets punished by Miz Catherine. Harrison and him run away from the farm and hide in a tree. They leave their lifetime friend and mother figure, an old slave named Lily, behind. They put onions on their feet so dogs can't track them.

  • Day 2

    Day 2
    They travel at night and go to the River Jordan (Ohio River). They travel across the river with the help of the River Man and meet a woman named Hetty Scott. She wanted to keep the fancy things she stole from her master but the River Man wouldn't let her keep them. When she refused, she got thrown off the boat.
  • Day 3

    Day 3
    As payment, the River Man takes all of their belongings except for a roll of gray yarn that belonged to Samuel's mother. The River Man tells them a plae where they can hide that belonged to a widow. They arrive at the widows house that lets them sleep there. Her name is Widow Taylor.
  • Day 4

    Day 4
    Widow Taylor takes them to a church, where they spend a night. They are greeted by Reverend Pry and Mr. Keepheart interviews them. He tries to write a story about them, but Harrison tels him off. He tells Mr. Keepheart that he doesn't have cuts on his back so he will never feel the pain Harrison does. Samuel has a nightmare about Harrison dying.

    Day 5
    They are taken under by people nicknamed Ham, Eggs, and Kettle. They almost get caught by a wagon with a white man driving who steals their fish. They go to a peddler's house named Green Murdock. The truth behind the owner of the gray yarn is revealed. It belonged to Samuel's mother as a sign to where she was. Green Murdock gives them a card reading and they get the Ace of Spades, the most unlucky card of all.

    Day 6
    Harrison comes down with a fever. Green Murdock doesn't want to take care of sick people so Green Murdock takes them to Negro Hollow. They meet and stay with people named Belle and August.

    Negro Hollow

    Harrison is sick with a lung fever and Belle is taking care of him. She tries to keep Samuel talking so he is not too sad about Harrison.

    Harrison's Recovery

    Harrison gets better. Harrison starts talking in his sleep about Samuel's relatives when Samuel realizes Harrison is his grandfather. Harrison talks about how he and his wife, Belle, tried to run away with Samuel's mother when she was a baby.
  • Day 13

    Day 13
    Samuel and Harrison learn from August and Belle that snow was coming, meaning white people were knocking on black people's doors to see their free papers. Samuel and Harrison had to run. They go on a whiskey train to reach Sandusky. They meet Ordee Lee, a fellow negro, on the train.
  • Day 14

    Day 14
    They meet Ol' Bowlegs, a man who guides blacks along the lake, at the docks and get caught by patrollers. Samuel finds their weakness and outwits them to free him. They get released. They get on the Otter and sail away.
  • Day 15

    Day 15
    They arrive in Canada on the Otter and go to Chatham. Their future is foretold and Ordee Lee becomes the finest blacksmith in Chatham and Harrison fished endlessly in his lake. Samuel reunites with his mother and they live happily ever after, although they never see Lily again and Ordee Lee never sees his family again.
