The Monroe Doctrine is basically created to ward off prying Europeans to the Americas, mainly South America and Central America. This greedy move reflects the United States' longing for these other American countries. From there, after saing these countries for themselves, the US begins things like the panama canal and other operaations to bring in more money. -
China and Britain Clash in the Opium War
China had gone into isolation recently, meaning that it had closed itself off to foreign trade of any kind. The British came up with an idea to trade with China. They smuggled in opium into China. Much of China became addicted, And, of the course the British were fine with this because it brought in more money. However, the Qing emperor was not and pleaded for them to stop, which they didn't. This resulted in a humiliating treaty for the Chinese, known as the Treaty of Nanjing. -
Commodore Perry enters Tokyo Harbor
IN 1853, Commodore Perry entered Tokyo with 4 large ships, and a well-armed crew, scaring the life out of many rural farmers, used to isolation from foreigners. Then, when Perry threatened the country with an ultinatum, 'open up free-trade and I'll come back in a year with more ships to hear your answer', the Japanese had no choice but to agree. This began a long series of reforms and modernization from the shogun eras. -
US Wins Spanish-American War
The US partook in the Cuban war for indepence, or the Spanish-American War, and won.This made Cuba an independent nation, in theory. Howeverm we continued to control them from a distance, implementing our government structures and things into their daily life. This enraged the Cubans. -
Mexican Revolution Begins
After relatively recently declaring its independence from Spain, Mexico sets out again to declare its independence as a nation. From this point in time, many reformers, leaders, and presidents attempt to change Mexico. Also, some valuable reforms are created and added to the new country's new constitution. -
Panama Canal Opens
After a failed attempt by the French, the US successfully builds the Panama Canal, connecting the the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This cut the usual travel time between waters in half. This also would encourage more trading with the US if it was easier to do so. Also, the province of Colombia was paid 10 million dollars for use of their land. So it was a pretty good deal in all.
