Maryland wanted to tax bank notes issued by any bank outside Maryland. After A dispute with congress, congress won. -

Compromise on wether to allow slavery in Missouri. It put wheels in motion for the civil war. -
Santa Fe Trail
A trail that served as a highway for travelers, commerce, and military use. It ran from Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Principle route to far west. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
Treaty between the United States and Spain that ceded Florida to the U.S. It was important because it settled border disputes between the U.S. and Spain. -
Sectionalism
The belief that a section of the country has needs that are more important than the country in general. Played a role as a large political force in pre-civil war. -
Monroe Doctrine
A foreign policy which stated that European powers could not interfere with the United States. It guaranteed American dominance of the western hemisphere. -
Jacksonian Democracy
A form of democracy established by Andrew Jackson when the people hold all the power. Power was more diversified. -
Spoils System
A method of appointing government officials bas on political connections. It encouraged people to participate in government. -
Tariff of Abdominations
Goal was to protect industries in northern states from competing with Europe. Created an inderect problem in the south. -
States' Rights Doctrine
Doctrine over states rights. It has been used as a coverup to hide more important issues. -
Indan Removal Act
Enacted by president Jackson. It moved native american tribes to "Indian Territory" in present day Oklahoma. This led to the Trail of Tears. -
Indian Territory
Territory where native american tribes were moved to in the Indian Removak Act. -
Nullification Crisis
Section crisis during Andrew Jackson's presidency. South Carolina's attempt to nullify a law passed by federal government. South Carolina threat that they would secede from the United States. -
Whig Party
Poitical party during the era of Jacksonian Democracy. The opposed the policies of Andrew Jackson. They managed to get two men elected president. -
Alamo
Meeting place for the Texas Army and their fight for independencve from Mexico. All defenders were killed. -
Trail of Tears
Relocation movement of Native Americans. Many groups were forced to move into "Indian Territory" in present day Oklahoma. -
Oregon Trail
Historic east to west wagon route that connected various towns on the Missouri RIver to valleys in Oregon. Helped connect people. -
Manifest Destiny
19th century belief that the United States had a mission to expand westward. Important because of westward expansion -
Donner Party
Pioneers who froze to death in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. They were important because they explored very far. Cannibalism occurred. -
Fourty-Niners
Miners who came to California during the California Gold Rush. People that shaped one of the most signifigant events of the 1800s. -
California Gold Rush
A rush that brought large numbers of American citizens and immigrants to California because there was gold there. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Treaty that ended Mexican-American War. It sold New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevadah, Utah, and part of Colorado to the United States -
Gadsen Purchase
The area ceded to the U.S. for $10 million in 1853. America bought this land because people thought it was the best route for a railroad.
