Gunpowder Revolution

1450

Gunpowder had become popular and was used across the world. It was highly dangerous to not only the target but the user as well. It eventually led to financial issues all across the world because of how much gunpowder weapons cost.

Humanistic Education

In the late 1400s, a new style of humanistic education that included rhetoric, math, and history had begun in Italy. They began with teasing children in Italy but by the 16th-century nobles, merchants, and priests all across Europe were learning using humanistic education

Indulgences

1500

What had started out as a way to reward people for doing good deeds quickly became a way for the Church to earn easy money. The selling of indulgences had become out of control as churches began to imply salesmen to sell them to anyone and everyone who wanted one.

Martin Luther

1510

Martin Luther began to question whether or not salvation actually came from good works. He came up with the idea that no matter what you did in life, it wasn’t going to be good enough to get to heaven. what you needed was faith.

The 95 Theses

1517

Luther noticed that the indulgences were getting out of hand when Pope Leo X came out with a new type of indulgence that would get rid of all of your sins at once. Because of this, Luther posted a list of 95 attacks against the indulgences called the 95 Theses.
The 95 Theses are considered the first official act of the protestant Reformation.

Luthers Pamphlets

1520

By this time Luther was publishing pamphlets attracting the pope and discussing the ways in which the church was corrupt. These pamphlets led to Luther going to trial where he refused to recant and was therefore labeled an outlaw.

Lutheranism

1530

Lutheranism was spreading rapidly and had taken over the northern half of Germany while the southern half remained Catholic.

The Catholic Reformation

1540

Up until this point, the Catholic Church didn’t see the Protestants as any kind of threat, but once Lutheranism became more popular, the Catholic Reformation began. They tried to pull the Lutherans back in but by 1550 they realized that the two religions were split and not going to come back together.

The French Wars of Religion

1560

During this time France was made up of two factions called the Catholic Guise family and the Huguenot Bourbon family and they did not get along. Each group fearing the power of the other, both groups made their own type of military. The Guises called theirs the Catholic League and the Huguenots had the Huguenot forces. They went to many battles with one another
