Right to Vote In 1870 the Constitution gave African-Americans the right to vote; but the franchise is still determined by the individual states. Therefore, many states put up 'Jim Crow Laws' to prevent African-Americans from voting, based on education, residence, and property. These restrictions effectively prevented them from voting, until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1860s---Which even included placing troops at some of the ballot boxes. -

First Celebration of the Black History Month
The expansion of Black History Week to Black History Month was first proposed by the leaders of the Black United Students at Kent State University in February 1969. The first celebration of the Black History Month took place at Kent State one year later, in February 1970. -
