Nasser announced the fact that it was nationalized during the last minutes of his long speech, which bought the Egyptian Forces enough time to conquer it. It was a great shock to the British, Eden especially, and only a greater shock when the Egyptians managed to set sail the first ship across it.

The war lasted six days but what led to the Israeli victory was the fact that they were a lot more organized and they managed to destroy Egyptian airforce using the media as one of their weapons.
