Jem and Scout were playing in their backyard. They heard noise coming from Ms. Rachels collard patch and went to investigate. They found a short little boy sitting in the patch. They became friends. -
Boo Radley
After hearing the story of Boo Radley the children decide they will make Boo Radley come out. After a few failed attempts they content themselves with acting out the story. Atticus does not approve. -

Dill Returns and Scout Starts School
Upon Dill leaving Scout is sad and upset. She pouts around until beginning school. On her first day of school Scout is chided for already knowing the materials, and punished for defending walter. -
Nathan Radley Fires a Gun
Jem and Scout configure a scheme to look into the Radley's house. Thinking it is an intrudor, Nathan Radley fires a shotgun. Jem runs away losing his pants which were caught on the fence. Later he finds his pants mended and folded for him. -
Jem and Scout Find Treasures
As Jem and Scout walk by the Radley house each day they begin to find small items stuffed inside a knothole in a tree. They find pennies, soap carvings, and a pocket watch. After this continues for awhile they place a note in the knothole. The next day the knot hole is filled with cement. -
Tom Robinson is Arrested
After being accused of raping Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson is arrested. The judge appoints Atticus to be the public defender. After this, Scout is told that her father is a negro-lover. -

Atticus Shoots a Rabid Dog
After news comes that a mad dog is coming towards them, someone tells Atticus to shoot it. Atticus is reluctant but agrees. He sees the dog from a long way off and kills it. The children find out that Atticus used to be the best shot in the area. -
Jem is Punished for Destroying Flowers
After many insults and taunting from Mrs. Duboses that he goes and cuts off the tops of her Camelias. Upon learning of this, it is decided that Jem has to read to Mrs. Dubose for an hour for a month. Scout goes along with them and only later do they find out Mrs. Duboses was trying to break her morphine addiction. -
Aunt Alexandra Comes to Town
Aunt Alexandra comes to town. Jem and Scout later find out it was because she believed the children needed a feminine influence. Scout is very reluctant to the idea of her aunt bossing her around and is very stubborn. -
Dill Returns
After a fight with Jem, Scout goes to her room. She hears something under the bed and thinks it's a snake. She calls in Jem and they find it's Dill. Jem tells Atticus and Dill is allowed to stay there. They find out that he ran away from home. -
Atticus and the Children Stop a Lynch Mob
After Atticus leaves to go to town, the children follow him. At the jail a group of people are asking for Tom Robinson. Scout and the kids run out and Scout successfully convinces the mob to leave by appealing to Mr. Cummingham. -
The Trial
The children go to the trial and sit in the colored balcony. At the trial Tom Robinson is found guilty. Calpurnia then comes in and asks Atticus where the children are. Someone points them out and they are sent home. -
Calpurnia Finds Food on Doorstep
The day after the trial Calpurnia finds baskets full of food on the doorstep. When Scout sees them she asks Atticus what they are for? He tells her that they are from the Black people. -
Tom is Shot While Escaping
After being proved guilty Tom is put in jail. Although Atticus promises that they will appeal, Tom feels that he has a better chance escaping. He tries to climb over the prison fence and is shot by the guards. -
Bob Ewell Tries to Kill Jem and Scout
Boo Radley, after sitting in his house for years, comes out to save the children. Walking home from a halloween pageant, Scout and Jem are attacked by Bob Ewell. Jem and Ewell fight and Jems arm is broken. Bob Ewell tries to strangle Scout but she is saved when kills Bob Ewell with a kitchen knife.
