  • Atticus gives Scout a lesson

    Atticus gives Scout a lesson
    "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around In it." P.39 Chapter 3
    This is the part in the book where Scout is talking to Atticus because she doesn't want to go back to school. She doesn't want to go back to school because Miss Caroline said Atticus is teaching Scout the wrong stuff. This relates to the theme Empathy because Atticus is trying to explain to Scout where Miss Caroline is coming from.
  • Protecting Jem and Scout

    Protecting Jem and Scout
    Atticus says, "I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through this without bitterness, and most of all, without catching make homes usual disease… I just hope Jem and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town."
    Atticus was talking to Uncle Jack about hoping Jem and Scout wouldn't listen to the town about Atticus defending Tom Robinson. This is important because Atticus wants Jem and Scout to have Empathy for him and understand why he is defending Tom Robinson.

    "Naw, Scout, it's something you wouldn't understand. Atticus is real old, but I wouldn't care if he couldn't do anything- I wouldn't care if he couldn't do a blessed thing. P.131 Chapter 10
    Atticus just shot Tim Johnson and Scout wants to tell everybody at school her dad has the best shot in Maycomb. Jem is showing empathy towards Atticus because Atticus would have told Jem and Scout if he had the best shot.
  • Applying Atticus's advice

    "As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem's skin and walk around in it: if I'd gone alone to the Radley place at two in the morning, my funeral would have been held the next afternoon. So I left him alone and try not to bother him." P.77 Chapter 7
    Jem went back to get his pants and Scout was going to go back with him, but then Scout took Atticus's advice and just left him alone. This is important because this was the first time she used Empathy and Atticus's advice.
  • Majority Rule

    " The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a persons conscience." P.139-140 Chapter 11
    Jem returns home from Mrs. Dubose's house after he apologized to her for cutting up her flowers. Atticus is talking to Scout about how nothing else matters but a persons conscience. Atticus is showing empathy towards other people's opinions.
  • Lynch Mob

    " I go to school with Walter," I began again. "He's your boy, ain't he? Ain't he, sir?" P. 2015 Chapter 15
    Scout, Jem, and Dill go to the group that is surrounding Atticus and Scout is asking Mr. Cunningham if he is Walter Cunningham's dad. Mr. Cunningham uses Empathy towards Atticus by reminding himself he is a dad just like Atticus and he makes the group leave.
  • Standing in someone's shoes

    "You children last night made Walter Cunningham stand in my shoes for a minute." P.210 Chapter 16
    Atticus is telling Scout, Jem, and Dill they made Walter Cunningham stand in his shoes for a minute and made the lynch mob leave. This is important to the theme because Scout made Walter Cunningham have empathy towards Atticus.
  • Feeling Sorry

    Feeling Sorry
    "And so a quiet, respectable, humble Negro who had the unmitigated temerity to 'feel sorry' for a white woman has had to put his word against two white people's." This is the part in the book where Atticus is giving his final argument for Tom Robinson. This is important because Tom is showing empathy towards Mayella by feeling sorry for her and understanding her.
  • Reflecting on Atticus's lesson

    " Atticus was right. One time he said he never really know a man and tell you stand in the shoes and walk around in them."
    P.374 chapter 31
    Scout just walked Boo home and she was reflecting on whatatticus taught her that you don't know a man until you walk inside his shoes. This is important to the theme because she saw from boo's point of view and understand's empathy.
