  • 1948 War

    1948 War
    Israel declared independence. Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq attacked Israel.Israel gained land. Egypt gained the Gaza Strip, Jordan gained the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and Jews became refugees.
  • Settlement Construction Begins

    Settlement Construction Begins
    Subsequent to the 1967 War, Israel began building settlements along the Gaza Strip, Sinai, and West Bank. Palestinians voiced out against this idea, creating further conflicts in reaching a peace agreement between Palestine and Israel.
  • Six Day War

    Six Day War
    Egypt blockaded Israel. Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq moved troops to Israel’s borders and made threatening statements. Israel launched a preemptive strike. Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the Gaza Strip and all the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt. More Palestinians and Jews became refugees. Terrorism became more common.
  • Attrition Battles

    Attrition Battles
    The Arab countries refused to make peace with Israel and attacked. The PLO also participated in the attack against Israel. And due to this, there was an increase in Jewish refugees.
  • Yom Kippur War

    Yom Kippur War
    On Yom Kippur, Syria and Egypt launched an attack against Israel. Following the war, no territory was gained by the Arab countries, though there was an increase in Jewish refugees.
  • Egypt and Israel Sign a Peace Agreement

    Egypt and Israel Sign a Peace Agreement
    A peace agreement was signed by Egypt and Israel, stating that Egypt would recognize Israel as a country, and Israel would give back Sinai to Egypt. The peace agreement also helped Egypt's economy.
  • The 1982 Lebanon War

    The 1982 Lebanon War
    Israel was attacked by Lebanon, and a war ensued. However, in result of this attack, the PLO was removed from Lebanon, preventing further terrorist attacks in Israel for some time, and a civil war occured in Lebanon.
  • The First Intifada

    The First Intifada
    Supplied by the PLO, the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip and West Bank protested against Israel’s taking of territories. This caused for an increase in Jewish refugees.
  • The Oslo Accords

    The Oslo Accords
    The Accords entailed that Israel would remove military forces from the Gaza Strip. Israel and the PLO recognized each other. The PLO and Israel would live peacefully with each other. However, the Accords were not successful as each side would claim that the other did not meet the terms of agreement. Thus, there was an increase of conflicts between the PLO and Israel.
  • Israel and Jordan sign a Peace Treaty

    Israel and Jordan sign a Peace Treaty
    Israel and Jordan had signed a peace treaty. Following this, Jordan recognized Israel as a country, and there have been cultural trade including that of goods between the two countries.
  • The Camp David Summit

    The Camp David Summit
    Ehud Barak, the Israeli prime minister, promised to withdraw some land and East Jerusalem in exchange for peace with Palestine, but Yasser Afrat, the president of Palestine, wished for more and so, the attempt at a peace treaty was not successful. This event was held in Camp David, set by U.S president, Bill Clinton. Following this event, an increase in conflicts between Palestine and Israel arose.
  • The Second Intifada

    The Second Intifada
    A general from Israel, General Sharon, visited a holy site that was pertinent to both Islam and Judaism. This sparked an uprising by the Palestinians, which increased more Palestinian and Jewish refugees.
  • Arab Peace Initiative is Proposed

    Arab Peace Initiative is Proposed
    The Arab Peace Intiantive proposed peace from the Arab League if Israel agreed to some conditions like Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories captured in 1967.
    Though not all conditions were accepted by Israelis.
  • Israel Begins contructing the West Bank Barrier

    Israel Begins contructing the West Bank Barrier
    Israel started building the West Bank Barrier as a security fence because of the terrorist attacks and the suicide bombings against Israeli citizens.
    Israel is more secure and safe because of the wall but it causes problems for Palestinians by cutting them off from their own land and having them go through checkpoints.
  • The Roadmap for Peace is Proposed

    The Roadmap for Peace is Proposed
    Introduced by the U.S, this roadmap proposes three phases to help the Israelis and the Palestinians live in peace.
    Progress on the roadmap has stopped completely.
  • Israel Disengages from Gaza

    Israel Disengages from Gaza
    This was a separation to keep Israel from Palestinian territories physically, and to provide more security for Israelis.
    Increased attacks from terrorists from Gaza into Israel. Many people take taken and resettled into Israel from the Gaza Strip.
  • Hamas is Elected

    Hamas is Elected
    Hamas gets 76 out of the 132 seats and also seeks the destruction of Israel.
    The West detached from the governement and put restrictions.
  • The 2006 Lebanon War

    The 2006 Lebanon War
    July 12, 2006 - August 14, 2006
    Hebollah terrorists attackedIsraeli soilders by crossing between the border between Lebanon and Israel.
    Israel responded by air strikes. Many Israelis were killed, a lot of property damage, Lebanon's transportation was destroyed.
  • The Battle of Gaza

    The Battle of Gaza
    June 7, 2007 - June 15, 2007
    Hamas radicals attacked Fatah in Gaza and gained control of Gaza.
    Sanctions by the West were raised. The Hamas government was dismissed.
  • The Gaza War

    The Gaza War
    December 27,2008 - January 18, 2009
    Hamas was attakced by Israel in Gaza.
    Significant amounts of damage to buildings and houses many losses of civilians.
  • Gaza Flotilla Incident

    Gaza Flotilla Incident
    Israelis attacked a flotilla of six ships stopping ther way to Gaza. After Israel got control of one ship the rest followed to Ashdod.
    Nine Turks were killed and this caused a rift between Israel and Turkey.
  • The Arab Spring

    The Arab Spring
    Protests against goverment corruption and supression, began in Tunisia after a fruit vendor set himself on fire, causing uprisings to occur throughtout the Middle East and to North Africa.
