The first snowboard was built in New Jersey in 1963! Tom Sims of Sims Snowboard fame is responsible for this. He built his first snowboard while he was still in junior high school. -
World’s First Full Size Snowboard
The short snowboards Tom created and rode throughout most of the 60′s nose dived in powder, so Tom decided to design and build a five foot snowboard with a ski-tip kicked nose to take to college in New Hampshire. -

The company is often credited as the first to design boards with metal edges, making for a smoother and more stable ride; the first to design boards for women, making them lighter, shorter and narrower to accommodate smaller boots; and one of the first to design and manufacture high-backed snowboard bindings, which allow for more responsive maneuvers. Tired of having to use his skis in hard pack conditions, Tom decides to put metal edges on his snowboard and discovers a whole new world of control and response at ski areas and in competitions. -
First half pipe
Mike Chantry took Tom Sims along with Terry Kidwell, to show Tom the ditch in the abandoned Tahoe City trash dump. As Tom looked on, Terry dropped in and blasted a huge backside air in the snow covered 1/4 Pipe. Knowing he just got a glimpse of the future, Tom went on to build the World’s First 1/2 Pipe at the inaugural World Snowboarding Championships. -
Stunt double in ¨007¨
Sims was the primary snowboarding stunt double for “007” (Roger Moore) in the 1985 James Bond film – A View to a Kill. -
Snowboarding added to Olypics
The International Olympic Committee announced in 1995 that snowboarding, curling, and women’s hockey would join the ’98 Nagano Winter Games program. -
Tom Sims death
Tom Sims passed away on September 12, 2012 at the age of 61.
