Birth of the King
King Louis was born in Versailles to Louis XV and Marie Joseph of Saxony. The death of his father in 1765 put him first in line for the throne. Louis becoming king was the first step towards a bloody revolution.

Causes of the French Revolution
Marie Antoinette was a large spender, and quickly depleted the National Savings. The Enlightenment was also firing up the people, pushing them to revolt. Also, France was in a tough financial spot after helping the American Colonies defeat Britian in the American Revolutionary War.

Formation of the National Assembly
National Assemblyon May 5, 1979, representatives of the 3rd Estate were outvoted, leading them to meet separately. They began to meet on their own, but officially called themselves the National Assembly on June 17.

Tennis Coart Oath
The Tennis Coart Oath was that the National Assembly would meet until the D.R.M. was complete. Everyone kept the promise, and the document was created a couple of months afterward.

Storming of the Bastille

BastilleFrench citizens were very angry with the overtaxation, and were arming themseles in any way possible to fight the government and government officials. While they had many guns, they were low on gunpowder. They knew that there were large amounts of powder and weapons at the fort/prison Bastille. So, a huge mob overpowered the guards and made their way to what they were searching for. -
D.R.M.
The D.R.M. was the constitution created by the National Assembly. It was a document listing rights that the French people should posses.

Bread March
Thousands of women rioted about the high price of bread. Marching the whole 12 miles to Versailles, they ransacked Paris for weapons for which to fight the king. This ended his independent ruling, causing a shift in power that more favored the common people as opposed to the French nobility.

Royal Escape
As the king's power became less and less, the family grew desperate. They planned to escape to Austria. They managed to get very few miles from the border, but were stopped and their cabin was searched. Their identity was uncovered and they were sent to Paris under house arrest.

The Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly made up the Legislative branch during this time. There were two groups in the assembly with very different ideas. One believed that there should be a constitutional monarchy and that the royalty could live alongside the government peacefully. The other group didn't believe that the Revolution was effective until the monarchy was completely diminished. October 1st, 1791 was the date of their first meeting.

Invention of the Guillotine
This machine, also known as the "National Razor", was responsibe for the deaths of thousands and what made the Revolution so bloody. It became popular because it was believed to be quick and humane. It claimed to be painless, though this could never be confirmed, as no one lived to tell the tale.

Death of King Louis XVI
After trying to flee the country with his family, he is seen as a traitor and put under house arrest in Paris. In court, the decision is quickly made: for the Revolution to truly succeed, the King must die. He tries to make a speak right before he is beheaded, but is drowned out by the drums. The king is no more.

the Committe of Public Safety is formed
This committee was formed during the Reign of Terror. One of the leaders of this group was Maximillien Robespierre, who ironically killed tens of thousands of people in the hopes of creating a safe republic. People were found guilty if theye were even somewhat believed to be supporting the monarchy.

Reign of Terror
The French army was losing and the Austrian/Prussian armies got within thirty miles of Paris, while Great Britian blocked all of France's ports. As a result, the National assembly started to kill anyone who at all opposed the Revolution. 40,000 people were sent to the guillotine, including Marie Antoinette. The Reign of Terror ends with the beheading of Maximilien Robespierre.

Death of Marie Anotionette
after her husband was executed, Marie was thrown in prison and put on trial. She was sent to the guillotine, but unlike her late husband, who was driven there in the royal carriage, she was driven there through town in an open cart, allowing the people to shout to her insults and threats as she was paraded to her death. When she came to the guillotine, her long, gray hair was cut off, as well as her head.

Execution of Robespierre
in his attempts to create a safer situation for the people, the Reign of Terror resulted in approx. 40,000 deaths. leaders of the Commitee of Public Safety that he would kill them as well. Many people feared him greatly, and these people eventually put him on trial and sent him to the guillotine.

Napoleon becomes Dictator of France
Napoleon Bonaparte was one of the most successful war generals of all time. During the war, he quickly rose through the military ranks. by 1799, he overthrew the French government and became the dictator of France.
