The Beginning of Public Education in The US
The General Court of Massachusetts decrees that every town with 50 families should have an elementary school. this would give basic information which would allow children to learn about their religion. -
Land Grants
The Continental Congress passes a law calling for a "Northwest Territory" survey. This law created townships to allowed us to reserve a part of land for a local school. This process is called "Grant Universities" and is still a process used today. -
The Call for Free Schooling
Pennsylvania state requested that lower income children should not have to pay for school. It was expected that higher income parents should pay for their children's schooling. -
Reform Schools
Massachusettes reform school opens in Westboro. This is were children are sent if they refuse to go to public school. -
Bureau of Indian Affairs Boarding School
Congress made it illegal for Native Americans to be taught in their own language. As a solution, they took children as young as 4 years old and sent them to " Bureau of Indian Affairs Boarding School" to be taught "Kill the Indian to save the Man" -

Expanding Education to African Americans
African Americans attempted to bring their children to public schools. After the civil war that ended slavery, we made some political changes to make free public education. This later led to segregation. Sizes of schools were then cut in half which led to immigrant communities to lose their local schools. -
Plessy V. Ferguson
The Supreme Court rules that the State of Louisiana has to require "Separate but equal" railroad cars. This informed the rest of the US that the government considered segregation legal. This affect the daily lifs of non-white students since they were not recieing the same quality of education -
Brown V Board of Education
The Supreme Court agreed that segregated schools are considered unequal and must be abolished. Most whites were not in favor as this idea as it led to African Americans to attend their school. It did allow African Americans to receive good education and was closer in distance. -
Title IX
This act was update the Amendment to include jobs and secondary life in the discrimination act which allowed anyone to work and go to school without being segregated or discriminated. -
Education of all Handicapped Children Act
On November 29, 1975, President Gerald Ford signed into law the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142, or the EHA. The EHA guaranteed a free, appropriate public education, or FAPE, to each child with a disability in every state and locality across the country. -

The court agreed that education can be granted for all individuals regardless of documentation status. -
No Child Left Behind Act
President Bush signed a bill to enforce the No Child Left Behind Act which enforced schools to utilize standardized testing to ensure students are being taught and having successful results. This would lead to schools being held responsible for the actions based of the results of the student's test.
