First English Colony Failing
Lack of food, quareling with neighboring Indians. So, when English ships stopped at the harbor, the exhasted sailors sail home to England. -
England Prepares For War With Spain
Because England prepares for war with Spain, it causes a major three year delay for John White's return back to Roanoke. -
Sir Walter Raleigh sends John White back to Roanoke
Sir Walter Raleigh sends John White back to Roanoke with colonists. Supplies at the colony are running low, so John White leave 117 colonists behinde to return to England to get help, and he plans to be back in a few months. -
Roanoke Fails
John White returns and he and his men fin Roanoke empty. The word croatoan carved on a tree. White wants to go to that island to see if any colonists are there. unable to do it because fo a sever storm, and his crew's refusel to make the trip, John White cannot find the lsot settlers. Twenty Years After Fialure of Roanoke Jamestown
King James I of England granted a Roayl Charter to establish a new colony in North America in Virginia. The King's Royal Charter named 2 branches of the company, The Virginia Company of London and the Virginia Company of Plymouth. -
Colony Near Failure
The Algonquian Indians bring corn and bread to Jamestown to help feed the colonists. Captain John Smith builds a friendship with Chief Powhatan. -
The Founding of Jamestown
1607, May, the Colonists choose Jamestown Island and build Jamesport.
May, they met Cheif Powhatan's Indians. They tell the Colonists that they are eager to trade and they teach them about their chief. *1607 Chief Powhatan now had captured another 25 tribes.
1607-Fall Disasters start because Jamestown is a swampy area. Mosquitoes spread malaria and many peopel died. Also 13 Men Counsil that was chosen by the Virginia Company begin to fight each other and do little to plan otu the colony's future -
The end of a Peaceful Relationship
Peaceful relationship between the two groups ended because when the Indians refused to supply food, the colonists used force to sieze whatever they wanted. Next, John Smith aimed a gun at Chief Powahatan's brother and took hims as a captive and told the Indians if they until the Indians provided the corn to buy his freedom. -
Captain John Smith's New Rule
Colonists near starvation. Colonists not planting crops only looking for gold. Captain Smith sets new rule: "If you don't work, you don't eat," after, being elected President of Virginia counsil. Captain John Smith and Chief Powhatan agree in a trade treaty, so chief Powhatan will supply corn to the English. -

Jamestown's economy greatly imroved when the colonists began growing tobacco that the Native Americans had taught them. -

John Rolfe, a wealthy Jamestown tobacco planter marries Pocahantas, who is Chief Powhatan's daughter Later, in 1616, she was invited to thwe court of King James I because the English were fascinated by this "Indain Princess." -
Jamestown Colony Needed Women
The Virginia Comapny sent a shipload of women from England, so the men of Jamestown coudl become husbands. The Virginia company made a greatr profit from these marriges because each man who foudn a wife was charged 150 pounds of tobacco. -
African Slaves
The Dutch ships arrived with African slaves. The Dutch sold the slaves as laborers to grow tobacco. The colonists valued the agricultural skills that these African slaves go with them. -
Establishment of the House of Burgesses
The Virginia Company took the steps to establish a more stable government with the hope of attracting more settlers. The House of Burgesses, July 30, 1619, marked the beginning of a Representive Government, where voters elect respresentitive to make laws for them.
