The birth of Frederick Douglass
This is when Frederick Douglass was born, and around when the book starts -
Douglass learns to read and write
Douglass' master's wife, Mrs. Auld, teaches Frederick to read and write. This goes on until Mr. Auld catches wind of it and tells her to stop, He then "bribes" kids on the street with bread and finishes his learning that way -
Douglass' master dies
When his master dies, the slaves were treated as livestock. He is sent to live with Mr. Thomas Auld, in St. Michaels, who he deems is cruel; however he is eventually lent to Mr. Covey, the so-called "negro breaker." -
Douglass' time with covey
After failing to drive unbroken ox, Covey beats Douglass, after Douglass doesn't take his clothes off, he receives weekly beatings from Covey, one day, he collapses while working and his beaten, he then goes to Thomas Auld, who says he won't do a thing. One Monday morning, Covey tries to tie his legs, but Douglass decides to fight back. Covey calls for Hughes to come help, but Douglass kicks him. Covey calls for Bill, but Bill doesn't help, and Douglass says he to not treat him like an animal -
Douglass tries to escape
Douglass and a group of slaves tried to escaped by posing as fishermen in the middle of the night in a rowboat, but he is caught and jailed for two years. -
Douglass in Baltimore for the second time
After he returned to Baltimore, he was working in the shipyard. While there, he met his future wife, Anna. He was also beaten there, and nursed back to health. Mr. Auld wouldn't let him return to the shipyard -
Douglass escapes slavery
After the book picks up, Douglass talks about his escape; however, He doesn't give very many details on how he escapes. He was 20 years old when he finally escaped
