Timeline for Russian Revolution

  • Revolution of 1905 and the October Manifesto

Revolution of 1905 and the October Manifesto
I chose this image because this one revolution set forth the path for Russia to become a socialist state and all preceding events, akin to how many dominos can be triggered by one falling.
  • Beginning of WWI

    Beginning of WWI
I chose this image because the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is widely regarded as the most significant short-term cause in starting WWI.
  • Czar Nicholas II take sole control of military operations

Czar Nicholas II take sole control of military operations
I chose this image because Tsar Nicholas destroyed his own country's military through his attempt to increase its morale, akin to someone destroying their glass house while trying to attack someone with a stone.
  • Brusilov Offense

    Brusilov Offense
The tsunami photo represents the idea of the Brusilov Offense being a disaster, as nearly 1.5 million casualties happened on each side. It also represents the sweeping force of the Russian Armies, as they were able to push the Central Powers back over the 3-4 month offensive.
  • Assassination of Rasputin

    Assassination of Rasputin
I chose this cartoony and malicious representation of Rasputin because the Russian nobility saw him as evil, as the photo represents.
  • International Women’s Day March in Petrograd

International Women’s Day March in Petrograd
I chose this image because the textile workers demanded bread due to Russian food shortages.
  • Nicholas II Abdicates

    Nicholas II Abdicates
I chose this image because, in a sense, Nicholas II was forced out of his position as tsar, similar to how a tenant may be forced out of their home during an eviction.
  • Provisional Government formed

    Provisional Government formed
I chose this image because the provisional government was meant to act similar to the US congress as a legislative body.
  • April Theses published

    April Theses published
I chose this image because the April Theses were an introduction to Lenin's ideas for a lot of people, symbolized by Lenin waving to a crowd.
  • Return of Lenin from exile

    Return of Lenin from exile
I chose this image because Lenin made a dramatic entrance to a place where many opposed him, similar to Darth Vader.
  • First All-Russian Congress of Soviets meets

First All-Russian Congress of Soviets meets
I chose this image of Lenin yelling at a crowd to symbolize how he disbanded the Congress immediately after they started discussing anti-Bolshevik ideas.
  • July Days

    July Days
The armed demonstration photo represents how there was political violence and social unrest during the provisional government's continued failures, which led to the violent political suppression of the Bolshevik Party.
  • Kornilov Affair

    Kornilov Affair
The military shown in the city in the photo is likely similar (yet modernized) in comparison to the attempted coup that Kornilov tried after the dissatisfaction with the Provisional Government's control over Russia.
  • Trotsky Organizes the Red Guard to Defend Petrograd

Trotsky Organizes the Red Guard to Defend Petrograd
The blank trolley problem symbolizes how the red guard, made of labor unions and the workforce, were able to immobilize the railroads through strikes or messing with them to avoid Kornilov's transportation methods becoming a problem.
  • Bolsheviks Overthrow the Provisional Government and Take Control

Bolsheviks Overthrow the Provisional Government and Take Control
The photo shows (in a less violent and forceful manner) that the Bolsheviks walked into the government building and kicked out the weak provisional government. There was also opposition and resistance to this event, but the November Revolution of 1917 was quick, only prolonging through the subsequent civil war.
  • Cheka Formed

    Cheka Formed
The image is an official Cheka badge, but it highlights their role of terror and violence for the Bolsheviks easily through first the communist emblem, and then the sword behind it and red, which is a commonly aggressive color.
  • Constituent Assembly Meets and Is Disbanded

Constituent Assembly Meets and Is Disbanded
The photo of the dissolving medicine in water can be symbolic of the quick dissolving of the constituent assembly (medicine) when the Bolshevik head council (water) decided that the election seats were undesirable and got rid of it, making the entire central government appear as the Bolsheviks.
  • Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

    Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
The burnt money in the photo shows how awful of a financial decision the treaty was for Russia, as the majority of industry and resources was lost to Germany and the people of Russia were only more angry.
  • War Communism Created

    War Communism Created
The poster shows industry (maybe propaganda) of efficient industry. War communism, like this, was efficient, yet hard on the workers (like the exhausting labor of swinging the hammer as hard as the figure). Also, all workers were seen as resources rather than human, shown through the lack of characteristics on the figures.
  • Red Terror

    Red Terror
The skeleton in Red in this political cartoon or illustration shows how the Red army or Cheka only brought death, and that if they showed up it would not be peaceful. The city on fire in the back shows the overwhelming destruction and the size of the figure shows how efficient and quickly destructive the Red Terror was.
  • Kolchak (one of the White leaders) begins serious attacks against Reds from Siberia

Kolchak (one of the White leaders) begins serious attacks against Reds from Siberia
The reason why this photo was chosen is because, after the failure of the attack, they were forced to retreat and was eventually executed. Similar to the photo, they had to run away after having momentary collapse due to the Red Army being better organized and eventually collapsed.
  • Ukraine brought under Soviet control

    Ukraine brought under Soviet control
The photo was chosen because the Treaty of Riga was the treaty that ended the Polish-Soviet War. It was the treaty that led Poland to recognize the Soviet control over Ukraine. Hence that is why the photo of the Treaty of Riga was chosen.
