  • Northwest Ordinance

    The Northwest Ordinance was passed to regulate settlement. Northwest Ordinance provided a way for new states to enter the Union. A Bill of RIghts was listed in the territory. The Northwest Ordinance outlawed slavery in the new territiories. It also protected liberties.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was a US policy made by James Monroe. This policy was given in his annual address to congress. Monroe stated that the old world and the new world have different systems and they should stay that way. Monroe made four main points, one being that the US should not interfere with wth European affairs.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase was the acquiring of land from France. For 18 dollars per square mile, the US acquired 820,000 square miles. This is also equal to 15 million dollars. This purchase doubled the size of the US. It also strategically strengthed the US.
  • Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis was a political crisis during the presidency of Andrew Jackson. This was a conflict between South Carolina and the government. The tariff made southerners pay for more goods. The Nullification Crisis is important because this is the first time conflict between state and federal government almost caused a war.
  • Texas Annexation

    Texas was annexed in 1885 when it became the 28th state. Texas was apart of Mexico until 1836. Settlers from the US residing in Mexican Texas declared independence. There were issues over if Texas should be a free or slave state. The Texas Annexation is important because it was the only state to join by treaty.
  • Oregon Treaty

    The Treaty of Oregon was signed by the US and Britain. This ended 28 years of both countries owning the Pacific Northwest. The Treaty of Oregon stood as a border between both countries. The joint occupancy had to be renewed twice. The Oregon Treaty contributed to manifest destiny because the US wanted to fight for the expansion of the west.
  • Mexican Cession

    The Mexican Cession was a treaty between the US and Mexico. This treaty officially ended the Mexican War. The land that was acquired borders texas on one side. The Rio Grande River is on the other. The size of the US increased by 25% due to the Mexican Cession.
