    Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
    He and his wife were killed by the Bosnian Serb student Gavrilo Princip. They were shot at at close range while driving through Sarajevo, the provincial capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina.The political goal of the assassination was to liberate Bosnia and Herzegovina from Austro-Hungarian rule and establish a common South Slavic state. The assassination precipitated the July Crisis that led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia and the start of World War I.

At the end of October 1917, the German intervention to help Austria-Hungary resulted in a spectacular victory over the Italians at the Battle of Caporetto.The defeat sparked a crisis in Italy, which led to the dismissal of the army chief of staff, Luigi Cadorna, and the formation of a coalition government under Prime Minister Vittorio Orlando.
