    Assembly of notables

    An assembly of notable, consisting of leading noblement and ecclesiastics, rejected reforms. Only four Assemblies of Notables'd been summoned in the previous 200 years, the most recent in 1626. The Notables who gathered at Versailles in 02/1787 contained 144 men, only 2 of whom weren't nobles or higher clergymen. Among their number were 36 nobles, 14 bishops and 7 ‘Princes of the Blood’, as well as magistrates from the parlements, provincial deputies and the mayors of city governments.

    Estates general

    The king then called the estate general, which was an assembly of all three estate, in may at Versalles. People from all three estate presented their problems to the assembly in lists of grievances. The General States in France of the Old Regime were assemblies called by the King in an exceptional manner and attended by representatives of each estate: the clergy (first state), the nobility (second state) and the representatives of the cities that had consistory (Third estate).

    Great Fear

    On 14th july, the people of Paris attacked the Bastille, an medieval fortres that had become a prison and a symbol of absolutism.
    In rural areas attacked the nobles' castles. On 4th august, it aboliched feudal rights. A few days later, it published the declaration of the rights of man and of the citicen.

    New constitution

    In september, France's first written constitution ended royal absolutism, establishing a constitutional monarchy. It proclaims freedom of thought and of the press, and religious freedom. In the constitution the equality of the citizens is declared before the taxes, which will be proportional to the properties and income. The tax system was also modified: indirect taxes were eliminated and direct taxes were introduced, the amount of which depended on the wealth that was possessed.

    Legislative assembly

    In october France had a new constitutional monarchy with a legislative assembly, this assembly lasted for less than a year.
    Within the Legislative Assembly there were three large groups:
    The more moderate formed the right, around 260 constitutional monarchists.
    The left, less numerous. 136 deputies.
    The rest, 345 deputies.
