  • The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP)

    • Recommended that federal, provincial, and territorial levels of government recognize education as a core to self-government and necessary to build Indigenous capacity to run their own affairs
    • Many policy suggestions from the RCAP have not yet been implemented
  • The Education Action Plan

    • Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (now known as AANDC) partnered with the Assembly of First Nations to build an action plan that would tackle who does what in Idnigenous education, funding problems, and accountability (Gordon & White, 2014)
    • Process was halted in 2007 (Peters as cited in Gordon & White, 2014, p. 18); programs did not receive support
