Civil Rights Act Passed
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination against race, religion, nationality. It desegregated schools and public accomadations. It also got rid of poll tax and literacy tests african americans had to take in order to vote, which gave more african americans the oppurtunity to vote. It established the Equal Employement Act which prohibited discrimination towards race and gender when hiring someone for a job. -
US Sends Troops To Vietnam
After the Gulf of Tonkin incident, President Lyndon B. Johnson decided to send U.S troops to Vietnam. About 3,500 U.S troops landed in South Vietnam on March 8. They were supporting South Vietnam against communist North Vietnam. America lost about 47,000 troops in this war. For the troops that did make it back home, weren't honored for their bravery or supported by the government. -

The Black Panther Party was an organization formed by black nationalists in the United States. They wanted to protect black communities from police cruelty. The Black Panther was their newspaper. They protested in many different cities such as Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Philly, Washington D.C, and more. -
My Lai Massacre
On March 16, 1968, US troops came into the small village of My Lai and murdered many unarmed civilians of South Vietnam. Many women and children were killed. People were shot and killed on the streets. Lietenant William Calley was convicted but only served about 2 years under house arrest. -

While standing on his hotel balcony in Lorrain Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, MLK was shot at 6:01 p.m. About an hour later, MLK was announced dead. James Earl Ray was later arrested. Many blacks filled the streets and rioted. -

While leaving the Washington Hilton Hotel in D.C, President Reagan was shot along with 3 others by John Hinckley Jr. Fortunately, the strong president survived the gun shot and no one was killed. Hinckley was not found guilty because he was mentally insane.
