Bohr Atomic Model
In 1913 Bohr proposed his quantized shell model of the atom to explain how electrons can have stable orbits around the nucleus. Bohr modified the Rutherford model by requiring that the electrons move in orbits of fixed size and energy. The atom will be completely stable in the state with the smallest orbit, since there is no orbit of lower energy into which the electron can jump. Aaserud, Finn. "Niels Bohr." Institute for Theoretical Physics
Niels Bohr gave his inauguration speech in his new institute of theoretical physics within the university of Copenhagen. He expressed his ambition to make the new institute a place where the younger generation of physicists could propose fresh ideas. Aaserud, Finn. "Niels Bohr." Britannica.com 10/03/2019 -
The Copenhagen Interpretation
Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg and Wolfgang Pauli, devised the Copenhagen interpretation. By it, systems at atomic level don’t have definite properties prior to being measured. The act of measurement affects the system and causes it to select one of the various possible values after measurement. This feature is known as wavefunction collapse. Anirudh. Bohr's Complimentarity Principle
Simply, on the atomic level, a physical phenomenon can express itself differently based on the experimental setup used to observe the phenomenon. For example, light can sometimes appear as waves or sometimes as particles. This was first presented in Como, Italy at a conference. Bohr worked to generalize complementarity as a guiding idea applying far beyond physics. Aaserud, Finn. "Niels Bohr." Britannica.com 10/03/2019 -
Compound Nucleus Model
Niels Bohr formulated the Compound-nucleus model. It explained nuclear reactions as a two-stage process. First the bombarding particle becomes an integral part of a new, highly excited, unstable nucleus, called a compound nucleus. The compound-nucleus model is successful in explaining nuclear reactions induced by relatively low-energy bombarding particles. Anirudh. "Niels Bohr's 10 Major Contributions to Science." 03/21/2016 -
CERN
In 1954, Bohr was a major help in the foundation of CERN, preparing for the introduction of nuclear power. To this day, CERN is the worlds largest leader in particle physics experimentation and the biggest particle physics laboratory in the world.
