    Ellis was the first and largest federal immigrant processing station. Before Ellis island opened immigrants were processed by state and not the federal government. Ellis island received over 12 million future Americans before its abandonment.

    This was the "Separate but equal laws" that contributed to segregation. It had a seven-to-one majority vote from the supreme court. Even though it was said to be equal the laws favored white people.

    The war was declared after the sinking of the battleship Maine in Havana Harbor. The war ended with the treaty of Paris and caused Spain to lose control of the remains of its oversea empire. Following the war Cuba got liberation from Spain.

    This act made it illegal for people to work in poorly ventilated buildings. It also required indoor bathrooms and safe fire escapes. This act also led to the House Tenement Act which helped living situations in apartment homes.

    President McKinley was the third president that was assassinated. McKinley was only 58 years old when he was assassinated. He was killed during a celebration that was filled with 116,000 people.

    The NAACP is the oldest and largest civil rights organization. The organization was created in response to the violence against African American citizens. It has more than 2,200 branches worldwide.

    The fire killed 145 workers and was known as one of the most infamous incidents in history. It was a sweatshop that was filled with young girls who couldn't speak English. 79 years later to the day another fire that was similar to this one killed 87 people.

    Many women went to prison for protesting their rights. When the women went on hunger strike parliament came up with a bill called the "Cat and mouse" Act in order to prevent death. This act meant that some women were temporarily released and then sent back to prison once they recovered.
