    Missouri Compromise
    The North and the South had their own opinions on slavery which caused many disagreements. Henry Clay decided to try and help solve this problem by creating the Missouri Compromise. It is a series of laws that helped maintain the balance between free and slave states. Henry Clay was know as the Great Compromiser because of this.
  • The Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis
    Southern States felt like the tariffs were unfair and bias towards the North. Vice President John C. Calhoun said that any state could nullify a law that it considered unconstitutional. South Carolina argument was denied by the federal government causing them to threaten to secede. Henry Clay compromised and lowered the tariff because of this.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Congress was having many disagreements about the new territories that were won from Mexico. he were debating whether the territories would be admitted as free or save states. Henry Clay once again made up the compromise that California would be admitted as a free state. he also said that congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the new admitted territories.

    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
    This act was passed by congress in 1850. It created tension and caused the Northerners to become very angry. The act also permitted Africans Americans who escaped slavery, to be caught and turned in for money.
  • Bleeding Kansas 1855

    Bleeding Kansas 1855
    In 1855, 5000 people from Missouri voted for pro-slavery representatives in Kansas. This caused Anti-slavery opponents to start their own government and later get attacked which caused many people to die.

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was property to his owner and he couldn't escape that without the help from people in court. He was later sued for his freedom because he had been living on free territory and escaped his owner.

    In 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the election which caused the Southern States to start seceding from the United States.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for their freedom. He decided to make a plan to capture the arsenal to arm slaves. John Brown and he men he went with were captured and some were killed. John Browns actions caused him to be saluted at his death and known as a leader to others who wanted to eliminate slavery.
